  17.    This memo provides information for the Internet community.  It does
  18.    not specify an Internet standard.  Distribution of this memo is
  19.    unlimited.

  23.    This RFC is a near-verbatim copy of a document, known as NADF-265,
  24.    which has been produced by the North American Directory Forum (NADF).

  26.                             User Bill of Rights
  27.                          for entries and listings
  28.                           in the Public Directory
  29.  
  30.    The mission of the North American Directory Forum is to provide
  31.    interconnected electronic directories which empower users with
  32.    unprecedented access to public information.  To address significant
  33.    security and privacy issues, the North American Directory Forum
  34.    introduces the following "User Bill of Rights" for entries in the
  35.    Public Directory.  As a user, you have:
  36.  
  37.         I. The right not to be listed.
  38.  
  39.        II. The right to have you or your agent informed when
  40.            your entry is created.
  41.  
  42.       III. The right to examine your entry.
  43.  
  44.        IV. The right to correct inaccurate information in your
  45.            entry.
  46.  
  47.         V. The right to remove specific information from your
  48.            entry.
  49.  
  50.        VI. The right to be assured that your listing in the
  51.            Public Directory will comply with US or Canadian law
  52.            regulating privacy or access information.

  54.       VII. The right to expect timely fulfillment of these rights.

  63. Scope of Intent - User Bill of Rights
  64.  
  65.    The North American Directory Forum is a collection of service
  66.    providers that plan to offer a cooperative directory service in North
  67.    America.  This is achieved by interconnecting electronic directories
  68.    using a set of internationally developed standards known as the CCITT
  69.    X.500 series.
  70.  
  71.    In this context, the "Directory" represents the collection of
  72.    electronic directories administered by both service providers and
  73.    private operators.  When an entry containing information about a user
  74.    is listed in the Directory, that information can be accessed unless
  75.    restricted by security and privacy controls.
  76.  
  77.    A portion of the Directory -- The Public Directory -- contains
  78.    information for public dissemination.  In contrast, other portions of
  79.    the Directory may contain information not intended for public access.
  80.    A user or user's agent may elect to list information in the Public
  81.    Directory, a private directory, or some combination.  For example, a
  82.    user might publicly list a telephone number or an electronic mail
  83.    address, and might designate other information for specific private
  84.    use.
