  28.             ARNET, a TCP/IP network connected to the  Internet,  is  the
  29.             major  science  and  research network of Argentina.  It con-
  30.             nects approximately three hundred sites, mainly universities
  31.             and research organizations.  ARNET provides electronic mail,
  32.             USENET News, file server, and electronic mailing  list  ser-
  33.             vices.

  35.             Like other cooperative networks, ARNET has no central  plan-
  36.             ning  or  central authority.  The current international link
  37.             and the top-level AR domain are managed by the UNDP  (United
  38.             Nations  Development  Programme), Project ARG-86-026, at the
  39.             Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MREC), together with the Secre-
  40.             tariat  of  Science  and  Technology  (SECYT).  For the time
  41.             being, the top-level  subdomains  are  administered  by  the
  42.             UNDP/MREC project.

  44.             ARNET is a store-and-forward message network  based  on  the
  45.             Unix  communications  facilities.   The  international elec-
  46.             tronic mail gateway and USENET news backbone, atina.ar, is a
  47.             '386  machine  running  Unix  System V connected to the MREC
  48.             Local Area Network.  The network is connected to the  Inter-
  49.             net through a satellite link to SURANet at the University of

  69.             Most ARNET connections are over the public telephone network
  70.             or  the  public  packet-switching  network, ARPAC, using the
  71.             UUCP protocol in different environments.   USENET  news  and
  72.             most  electronic  mail  traffic  is  brought  to  ARNET from
  73.             uunet.uu.net via Internet.

  75.             Several major nodes, such  as  secyt.gov.ar  (Secretaria  de
  76.             Ciencia y Tecnologia), dcfcen.edu.ar (Departamento de Compu-
  77.             tacion, Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales,  Universi-
  78.             dad de Buenos Aires), and opsarg.org.ar (Organizacion Panam-
  79.             ericana de la Salud), call atina.ar  over  telephone  lines,
  80.             PSN  ARPAC,  or  leased  lines  to  distribute mail and news
  81.             traffic to other nodes.  Many nodes use various  implementa-
  82.             tions of UUCP for MS-DOS with limited functionality.

  84.             Future plans

  86.             There is a cooperation agreement between the UNDP/MREC  pro-
  87.             ject  and  the  SECYT  to distribute Internet services.  The
  88.             first stage will be the installation of  a  couple  of  Unix
  89.             boxes  at  major  regional sites, interconnected through the
  90.             PSN ARPAC and national  satellite  links  using  UUCP.   The
  91.             second  stage  will  be  the  migration from UUCP to TCP/IP.
  92.             There are under study different ways to distribute  Internet
  93.             services throughout the country, and to upgrade the interna-
  94.             tional link to the Internet.

  99.             ARNET's IP number is 140.191.  Several bits of  the  address
  100.             are   reserved   for   subnetting.    The   subnet  mask  is
  101.             255.255.254.0.

  103.             The current MX-host  for  the  AR  domain  is  uunet.uu.net.
  104.             Domain Name Service for AR domain is served by NS.UU.NET and
  105.             UUCP-GW-1.PA.DEC.COM.  Most systems on ARNET use the  Inter-
  106.             net addressing scheme and the UUCP bang notation.
