  9. IDPR Minutes

  11. The Inter-Domain Policy Routing Working Group (formerly the Open Routing
  12. Working Group) met for three of the five days during the December IETF
  13. meeting in Boulder.  IDPR Working Group meetings were organized into two
  14. sections:  a full-day tutorial and two days of discussions of future
  15. work.
  16.  
  17. The purpose of the tutorial was to provide an overview of the IDPR work
  18. for those people new to the Working Group and to update present Working
  19. Group members on the current state of affairs.  Tutorial material
  20. covered the IDPR architecture, protocols, prototype implementation, and
  21. progress on network experiments.
  22.  
  23. The future work discussions centered around two distinct areas:  what is
  24. needed for IDPR to become an Internet standard and what research topics
  25. should we pursue beyond IDPR Version 1.  The most controversial of the
  26. standard-related issues was addressing:  should we introduce a standard
  27. with our own addressing scheme or should we wait for the Internet
  28. community to resolve the current Internet addressing problems?
  29.  
  30. The research areas proposed included but were not limited to the
  31. following:

  34.   1. Develop good heuristics to increase the efficiency of route
  35.      generation;
  36.   2. Explore multicast and multipath routing mechanisms for
  37.      incorporation into IDPR;
  38.   3. Determine the best ways to use the distributed, hierarchical
  39.      database of IDPR connectivity and policy information;
  40.   4. Expand policy-based routing to the more general area of
  41.      policy-based resource allocation, including resource reservation
  42.      and flow control.

  45. We are now trying to determine which topics need the most attention and
  46. who will work on them.  Anyone interested in learning more about IDPR
