  7.         THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE NETWORK INFORMATION CENTER (DoD NIC)

  10. The Department of Defense Network Information Center (DoD NIC) is located at
  11. Boeing Corporation at Tysons Corner, Vienna, VA and is funded by the Defense
  12. Information Systems Agency (DISA) to provide general user services to DISN
  13. users via telephone, electronic mail, a WWW page, and the U.S. Postal Service.
  14.  
  15. The DoD NIC works closely with the DISN Host Administrators, Node Site
  16. Coordinators, Domain Administrators, Network Administrators, and other
  17. Service administrative authorities to assist new and existing users in
  18. obtaining pertinent network information.
  19.  
  20. Databases and information servers of interest to network users are
  21. provided, including the WHOIS registry of network users, hosts, networks,
  22. domains, and communications server authorities. The DoD NIC is the source
  23. for various reference documents,and maintains a RFC (Request for Comments)
  24. collection. Many of the on-line files are available through the DoD NIC's
  25. automatic mail service, SERVICE@NIC.MIL.

  27. The DoD NIC registers DoD hosts and domains, assigns IP network numbers and
  28. Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs) for DoD entities, and provides domain name
  29. system server files to the NIPRNET community. The DoD NIC also registers
  30. NIPRNET users and administrators and issues Communications Server (CS) cards
  31. when authorized.

  99.  NOTE: In the filenames, the "nn" or the "nnn" should be replaced by the
  100.        number of the newsletter, bulletin or RFC.  For various Bulletins,
  101.        "YYNN" refers to the year the bulletin was issued followed by
  102.        the number of the bulletin for that year, e.g. "9001". There are
  103.        a few older bulletins without a year designation. These were
  104.        issued sequentially. Obsolete bulletins have been deleted.

  106. To retrieve a document whose filename is listed above, open an FTP
  107. connection to the NIC.MIL host, login as user ANONYMOUS and provide
  108. the password GUEST. Retrieve the desired file.

  111. VI.  ONLINE INFORMATION SERVERS

  116. a.     WHOIS
  117.  
  118. WHOIS is a DoD NIC program that provides an electronic "white pages"
  119. of network users.  It lists the name, network mailbox, postal address,
  120. and telephone number, for all registered users.  Host, CS, domain,
  121. and network information may be obtained from WHOIS as well.
  122.  
  123.      Accessing WHOIS
  124.  
  125. From a CS, provide your User ID and Access Code when prompted.. Then
  126. type NIC.MIL at the prompt. When greeted by the DoD NIC host, type "WHOIS"
  127. and press RETURN.
  128.  
  129. From a DISN host, use the TELNET program to connect to host NIC.MIL.
  130. When greeted by the DoD NIC host, type "WHOIS" and press RETURN.
  131.  
  132. WHOIS may also be run from a local host.  The WHOIS user
  133. program for several operating systems is available from the DODNIC.
  134. The "C" language version is in the NETPROG directory, whois.c.

  138. b.     NIC/QUERY
  139.  
  140. This service has been discontinued due to lack of use, and the availability
  141. of better tools to obtain the information.

  144. c.     ROOT DOMAIN NAME SERVER
  145.  
  146. The Internet NIC has responsibility for generating and installing the DNS files
  147. into the G.NET-SERVERS.NET  root server. These are updated five times a
  148. week.

  150. VII. ONLINE FILES

  154. The DoD NIC maintains a number of online files which are available to
  155. network subscribers via the file transfer program (FTP) or Kermit.
  156. These files contain information about  site personnel,
  157. hosts, and other subjects relevant to network users.  See the file
  158. netinfo/00netinfo-index.txt for an index to the files in the "netinfo"
  159. directory.  See also the Comm Server Users Guide, or contact the DoD NIC User
  160. Assistance service for more information.  Other publicly accessible
  161. directories include  RFC, IEN, SCC, and DDN-NEWS.

  164. a. How to Retrieve DoD NIC files Using FTP
  165.  
  166. To retrieve any of the DoD NIC's public files via your local FTP program,
  167. connect to the NIC.MIL host, and log in as ANONYMOUS with password
  168. GUEST.  FTP program use varies slightly from host to host, so please
  169. consult your Host Administrator for instructions, if needed.

  172. b. How to Retrieve DoD NIC Files Using Kermit
  173.  
  174. NOTE: KERMIT has been discontinued due to lack of use and the availability
  175. of the more efficient FTP.

  178. c. How to Use the DoD NIC's Automated Mail Service
  179.  
  180. SERVICE@NIC.MIL is an automated service provided by the DoD
  181. Network Information Center.  It allows access to DoD NIC documents and
  182. information via ordinary electronic mail.  This is especially useful
  183. for users who do not have access to the DoD NIC.
  184.  
  185.    To use the mail service, send a mail message to SERVICE@NIC.MIL.
  186. In the SUBJECT field, request the type of service you wish followed by
  187. any needed arguments.  The message body is normally ignored.  Large files
  188. will be broken into smaller separate messages.  The information you
  189. request will be sent back to you immediately.

  193. HELP            This message; a list of current services.
  194. HOST xxx        Returns information about host xxx.  WHOIS xxx can
  195.                 also be used to get more details about a host.
  196. INDEX           Returns the master list of available index files.
  197. NETINFO xxx     xxx is a file name or the word INDEX.
  198. RFC nnn         nnn is the RFC number or the word INDEX.
  199. RFC nnn.PS      to retrieve an available Postscript RFC. Check RFC INDEX for
  200.                 form of RFC.
  201. FYI nnn         nnn is the FYI number or the word INDEX.
  202. FYI nnn.PS      to retrieve postscript versions of FYI files.
  203. SEND xxx        xxx is a fully specified file name.
  204. WHOIS xxx       Returns information about xxx from the WHOIS service.

  223. VIII. USER REGISTRATION

  227. Host Administrators have overall responsibility for registering their
  228. users.  When new users acquire accounts on DISN hosts, their Host
  229. Administrator must complete a DoD NIC generated template to register them in
  230. the DoD NIC database.
  231.  
  232. End users who require DISN CS dial-up access to reach their hosts must
  233. have CS Access cards that are provided by the DoD NIC.  Approval for
  234. distributing the card is sent to the DoD NIC from the user's Local Access
  235. Authority.  Until the user is permanently registered, there may be
  236. temporary "Organizational" cards available from the Organizational Card
  237. Custodian.

  239. IX. HOST, DOMAIN, NETWORK NUMBER, IN-ADDR, AND ASN REGISTRATION
  240. NOTE: All templates are available through our WWW page at

  243. The DoD NIC is responsible for the registration of hosts, domains, IP
  244. networks, and autonomous systems numbers (ASNs) used by various
  245. DoD services and agencies.
  246.  
  247. To include a new host in the DoD NIC WHOIS database, the template
  248. found in templates/disn-node-template.txt needs to be completed and returned
  249. to HOSTMASTER@NIC.MIL.  All hosts acting as domain or IN-ADDR
  250. server, routers, gateways, or email servers must be registered.
  251.  
  252. Five times each week, information is generated and installed into the
  253. DoD NIC WHOIS database.
  254.  
  255. Military domains are registered via the domain template found in
  256. templates/domain-template.txt.  New domain information is installed into
  257. the DNS root servers five times per week.  Information
  258. regarding the root servers is kept in netinfo/root-servers.txt.
  259.  
  260. Military network number assignments are made when a network POC completes
  261. the template in templates/IP-address-template.txt and submits the
  262. template to Hostmaster@nic.mil.
  263.  
  264. To provide address to hostname reverse resolution, military IN-ADDR
  265. domains are registered within the domain root servers via an IN-ADDR
  266. template sent to the HOSTMASTER mailbox.  This template can be found
  267. in templates/in-addr-template.txt.
  268.  
  269. The DoD NIC assigns military autonomous system numbers (ASNs) when
  270. the template found in templates/asn-template.txt is sent to
  271. HOSTMASTER@NIC.MIL.  A complete listing of assigned ASNs
  272. is found in netinfo/asn.txt.

  274. From the domain, network number, and ASN templates, POC information is
  275. extracted and individuals that are not already registered are given
  276. records in the WHOIS database.

  278. NOTE: Templates submitted by U. S. postal mail cannot be processed.

  282. X.  SECURITY COORDINATION CENTER

  286. The DoD NIC is the site of the DISN Security Coordination Center (SCC).
  287. The SCC acts in conjunction with the DISN Network Security Officer to
  288. coordinate actions regarding security incidents and network
  289. vulnerabilities.  The SCC relays security-related information to the
  290. Network Security Officer and works with him in handling network
  291. security problems.  In addition, the SCC issues DISN Security Bulletins
  292. to network users.  The SCC can be contacted in these ways:
