  7. The ANSNet/NSFNET routing software in use today, which is based on a
  8. derivative of an early version of Gateway Daemon (GateD), does not
  9. scale to support the future needs of the Internet. To alleviate this
  10. problem, Advanced Network & Services (ANS) has joined a consortium
  11. with IBM Corporation, TGV, Inc., and Cornell University to upgrade
  12. GateD, deploy it on the ANS Network and distribute it to the public
  13. domain.

  15. Currently, GateD is being used in commercial products by several
  16. router vendors.  It will be upgraded to include support for IS-IS and
  17. BGP-4.  Developers from ANS and IBM have been working on the GateD
  18. enhancements for about five months and are testing them at ANS
  19. headquarters in Elmsford, NY, the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in
  20. Hawthorne, NY, and at Cornell.

  22. The first release will be introduced on the ANSNet by early February.
  23. It will be compatible with the existing software to ensure that there
  24. is no disruption in service.  Once BGP-4 is deployed, there will be a
  25. dramatic reduction in the amount of routing overhead on the ANS backbone;
  26. the number of routing table entries will be reduced by at least 30%.
  27. Mid-level and enterprise networks attached to the ANSNet that also
  28. deploy BGP-4 will be able to do explicit routing.

  30. As the enhancements are tested and frozen, Cornell will provide them
  31. to the public domain.  ANS and the consortium are offering to work
  32. with independent software vendors and router vendors to test the
  33. interoperability of their products with the new GateD enhancements.
