  3. SuperJANET Announced

  5. The Universities Funding Council (UFC) announced on 10
  6. November the development of SuperJANET, an advanced
  7. communications network for higher education in Great Britain.
  8. The contract for the new venture which has been won by BT is
  9. worth L18 million over four years, subject to a review at the end
  10. of the installation of the pilot phase.  SuperJANET will offer
  11. higher education and research institutions in Great Britain the
  12. opportunity to access the most advanced communications service
  13. to support learning and research activities.

  15. SuperJANET, which uses high performance optical fibre technology
  16. can be used to transmit voice, data and images.  The applications
  17. available initially will include: high performance computing,
  18. distance learning, electronic publishing, library document
  19. distribution, medical imaging and multimedia information
  20. services.  A pilot network will be established in January to
  21. March 1993 which will connect six sites: Cambridge, Edinburgh and
  22. Manchester Universities, Imperial College of Science, Technology
  23. and Medicine and University College, London, and the SERC
  24. Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.  Additional sites will be added
  25. during 1993-94 reaching a total of around 50.  Further sites may
  26. be added subject to additional funding.

  28. SuperJANET will complement the Joint Academic Network (JANET)
  29. which has served the academic community since 1983 on 200 sites.
  30. The advantages of the new network lie in its speed and the types
  31. of applications that it can support.  SuperJANET can transmit up
  32. to 1,000 millions bits of information per second, about 1,000
  33. times faster than the JANET.  This high speed allows the
  34. transmission of sophisticated image and voice
  35. communications in addition to data.

  37. SuperJANET is a pervasive high
  38. performance network offering wide opportunities not only for
  39. research but also for teaching applications.  In some areas, for
  40. example medical imaging and the virtual memory library, it will
  41. be possible to develop entirely new applications.  The increased
  42. capability will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of UK
  43. higher education, by allowing institutions to develop entirely
  44. new ways of storing, processing and distributing all types of
  45. information.

  47. SuperJANET represents an infrastructure that
  48. spans all academic and research sites and offers a broad spectrum
  49. performance to suit all needs including those of academics,
  50. research institutes, government departments, industry and
  51. commerce.

  53. BT was awarded the contract for the network.
  54. The network is designed to use synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) -
  55. in conjunction with SMDS.

  57. The SuperJANET team regards this as "critical activity if the UK 
  58. educational and research establishments are to feed British industry 
  59. with the necessary skills and expertise over the coming decade."
