  6. Memorial University, Newfoundland was the host of the sixth annual
  7. Canadian Research and Education Networking Conference, NET 92, in
  8. June.  These conferences are an opportunity for the many network
  9. administrators and technical staff, who collaborate throughout the
  10. year via the Internet, to meet in person to present papers and to
  11. socialize.  This year there were reports from national and regional
  12. networks, several technical presentations and some panel sessions.

  14. The liveliest session was a discussion on policies for addressing
  15. offensive material on the network.  The interest was so great that the
  16. participants continued discussing the issues for an hour beyond the
  17. scheduled time for ending the day's formal activities.  However, those
  18. present failed to resolve the dilemma of how to retain freedom of
  19. expression while attempting to curtail material that is grossly
  20. offensive to women, racial groups and others.  But there was agreement
  21. that network operators should not turn their back on this issue.

  23. The CANARIE (Canadian Network for the Advancement of Research,
  24. Industry and Education) project was the subject both of the keynote
  25. address by Ms. Jocelyn Ghent-Mallett of Industry Science and
  26. Technology Canada, and of a panel session.  Conference attendees
  27. learned that the outcome of this project will likely be a program with
  28. four major elements:
  29.  
  30.       -     immediate support for upgrading CA*net to
  31.             T1 bandwidths;
  32.  
  33.       -     support for the development of advanced
  34.             networking products, software and
  35.             applications;
  36.  
  37.       -     the establishment of a high-speed
  38.             experimental test network on which to test
  39.             these products;
  40.  
  41.       -     support for the migration of these advanced
  42.             networking products to an operational high-
  43.             speed network that will eventually succeed
  44.             CA*net.

  46. CA*net held its annual general meeting and a board of directors
  47. meeting during the NET 92 conference.  The following new officers were
  48. elected for the next 12 months: Mr. Gerry Miller (University of
  49. Manitoba) Chair, Mr. David Macneil, (University of New Brunswick)
  50. Vice-chair and Secretary, and Dr. Andy Bjerring (University of Western
  51. Ontario) Treasurer.  The CA*net board decided to establish a full-time
  52. position of Executive Director of CA*net, thus relieving the honourary
  53. officers and board members of much of the administrative work.  The
  54. board also agreed to further upgrade some of the CA*net links.  The
  55. bandwidths of the CA*net link now vary from 56 Kbps to T1.
