  5. GARR is the Harmonization Group for Research Networks operating
  6. under the Ministry of the University, Scientific and
  7. Technological Research (MURST).  GARR is also the name of the
  8. Italian research network.
  9.  
  10. The aim of GARR is to interconnect the Italian research and
  11. academic networks and to coordinate connections to international
  12. networks.  The network is operated by three public research
  13. institutions and three consortia offering computing resources to
  14. Italian universities.  The three public research institutions,
  15. the founding organizations, are the National Council for Research
  16. (CNR), the National Council for Research on Nuclear and
  17. Alternative Energies Sources (ENEA), and the National High Energy
  18. Physics Institute (INFN).  The three consortia are CINECA, CILEA,
  19. and Tecnopolis-CSATA.

  21. The backbone of the network provides four TDM channels over 2
  22. Mbps lines, carrying IP, DECnet, SNA and X.25 traffic.  The X.25
  23. protocol carries traffic destined for the European backbone IXI
  24. developed by the EUREKA-COSINE project.

  26. Mail traffic on the network uses IP/SMTP and X.400.  The
  27. electronic-mail GARR task force has adopted the policy of having
  28. every Italian domain registered through the DNS to be directly
  29. reachable through the Internet or indirectly through an SMTP to
  30. other protocol mail gateway.  Another mail path is through the
  31. COSINE X.400 WEPS.  GARR has recently been recognized as a
  32. non-forwarding Italian ADMD by the public X.400 administrators.

  34. GARR includes a Network Information Service (NIS) whose most
  35. important responsibility is information support for the Italian
  36. academic and research networks.  It offers direct support to the
  37. managers of GARR network nodes or regional networks and indirect
  38. support to end-users via the circulation of information.  The NIS
  39. is the reference point for the registration procedures (e.g., of
  40. organizations, networks, domains, and persons) required to access
  41. GARR and international networks.  For information about the NIS

  44. The backbone is built up by the original seven primary sites
  45. located in Milano (CILEA), Bologna (CINECA and CNAF-INFN),
  46. Pisa(CNUCE-CNR), Roma (ENEA and NIC-INFN) and Bari (CSATA).
  47. Recently the University of Naples (CISED) joined the backbone.
  48. The MURST also funded a project to connect the over fifty
  49. universities in Italy; the major ones will be connected as
  50. extensions of the backbone, while the others will be attached
  51. with 64kbps lines to the primary sites.

  53. At present, besides Napoli the following cities plan to connect
  54. within 92 their metropolitan area networks at high speed: Torino,
  55. Padova, Trieste, Palermo, and Calgiari.  Another thirty sites are
  56. planning to connect within a year or so at lower speed.  GARR
  57. will continue to maintain connections to the major research
  58. networks, including RIPE, EASInet, Internet, BITNET/EARN, EUnet,
  59. HEPnet, IXI-COSINE, EBONE, EMPP and other networking initiatives.
