  1. 012.40 SWITCH

  5. SWITCH is the Swiss national network for research and higher
  6. education.  It operates under the responsibility of the SWITCH
  7. foundation, created in 1987 by the Swiss federal government and
  8. the 8 states ("cantons") with a university.
  9.  
  10. SWITCH is funded by usage-proportional contributions from member
  11. universities and by selling its services for the support of
  12. education and research activities in public organizations and
  13. industry.  For central support and for the operation of its
  14. services, SWITCH has created a head office with staff of some 10+
  15. persons, located in Zurich.  More detailed information on SWITCH
  16. can be obtained from postmaster@switch.ch.

  18. SWITCH operates its own IP backbone network, based on a trunk of
  19. 2 Mbps lines and some lower-speed lines to terminal sites with
  20. low traffic, which also provides high-speed connectivity to
  21. partner networks in Europe and overseas.  Sites connected to
  22. SWITCH include all Swiss universities, vocational training
  23. schools, service providers like public libraries and the Swiss
  24. high performance computing center in southern Switzerland,
  25. government and industry research laboratories and international
  26. organi like ISO and the ITU (note the CERN is a networking entity
  27. entirely independent from SWITCH).

  29. SWITCH provides and supports a set of value-added services, the
  30. most important being "SWITCHmail" and "SWITCHinfo."  SWITCH makes
  31. it a policy to focus on international standards, where feasible,
  32. of the OSI family.  Thus SWITCH has been one of the pioneers of
  33. the introduction of X.400 services in Europe (the share of X.400
  34. in the overall national mail traffic went as high as 50 percent,
  35. although at the level of the end user this percentage is
  36. substantially lower).  Presently, SWITCH is very active in the
  37. introduction of a national X.500 infrastructure, integrated into
  38. the European PARADISE project.
