  1. 012.28  Netherlands - SURFnet

  4. SURFnet bv is the national organisation in the Netherlands for the
  5. provision of information and communication services for research and higher
  6. education including industrial research. It is a private
  7. not-for-profit company. The owners are the SURF Foundation (51%),
  8. representing the user community, and the Netherlands PTT (49%).
  9.  
  10. The main services of SURFnet are:
  11.  
  12. - Megabit multi-protocol backbone services (IP and X.25) with IP
  13.   rates up to 1.5 Mbps; CLNS will follow in 1992;
  14.  
  15. - E-mail, file transfer and remote access, both TCP/IP and OSI,
  16.   including gateway services;
  17.  
  18. - Open Library Network in cooperation with the national
  19.   organisation for library automation Pica;
  20.  
  21. - File services and a variety of other information services e.g.
  22.   NEWS (in cooperation with NLnet, the Dutch part of EUnet); in The
  23.   Netherlands SURFnet is responsible for EARN/NJE and HEPnet
  24.   services.

  26. The SURFnet services are managed in a one-stop shopping approach
  27. where customer total support, administrative and technical (e.g.
  28. help-desk), is provided by SURFnet's personnel. Operational
  29. management tasks are subcontracted, SURFnet retaining the overall
  30. service provision responsability vis a vis its customers. SURFnet
  31. has 22 employees, 9 of them being responsible for user support,
  32. network consultancy and account management, 6 are responsible for
  33. network management, quality control and network
  34. development and the remaining 7 are dealing with general management
  35. and internal support. The subcontracted operational management
  36. tasks are carried out by approximately 10 additional full time
  37. equivalents.

  39. The 1991 turnover was 7 M$. The 120 connected institutions and
  40. companies pay 5.5 M$ for operational services via volume
  41. independent tariffs. The remaining 1.5 M$ are related to
  42. forthcoming innovative services (i.e. pilots, development projects)
  43. and are financed by the government funded SURF Foundation.

  45. SURFnet's activities are restricted to universities, colleges,
  46. research institutions including industrial research, scientific and
  47. public libraries and academic hospitals.
  48.  
  49. SURFnet is strongly focussed on international cooperation, both in
  50. operational and in innovative activities. International
  51. connectivity is presently achieved via the EBONE initiative and via
  52. IXI. SURFnet's employees are active in several international bodies
  53. and programs (i.e. RARE, Internet, COSINE).
  54.  
  55. Current development activities include:
  56.  
  57. - The development of an Open Library Network based on the VTP
  58.   protocol;
  59.  
  60. - The connection of student workplaces at home via the TV cable
  61.   infrastructure;
  62.  
  63. - Enhancement of the Megabit multiprotocol backbone in terms of
  64.   topology (resiliency), introduction of CLNS, introduction of 34 Mbps
  65.   trunks, upgrade of international connectivity, investigation of
  66.   protocols like Frame Relay, DQDB and ATM and integration of network
  67.   management;
  68.  
  69. - Extension of the pilot X.500 directory service with full scale
  70.   data management tests and interworking tests;
  71.  
  72. - Set up of an X.400 1988 extension of the present X.400 1984
  73.   infrastructure including interworking tests of new products;
  74.  
  75. - Set up of a file service based on FTAM and FTP with interworking
  76.   tests of new products;
  77.  
  78. - Introduction of security procedures and facilities including the
  79.   set up of a CERT NL (Computer Emergency Response Team);
  80.  
  81. - The set up of a pilot Full Image Document Delivery Server in
  82.   cooperation with scientific libraries and publishers (under
  83.   preparation).
