  1. 012.17  The UNINETT SAMSON Project

  5. UNINETT is the Norwegian network for education and research.  The
  6. goal of the SAMSON project is to provide network access to all
  7. higher education (120 units) in Norway by the end of 1992.
  8. Coordinating student applications for higher education (12th year
  9. and upwards) is the initial goal of the project, but SAMSON will
  10. eventually give the institutions access to all UNINETT services
  11. including SMTP and X.400 electronic mail, FTP file transfer,
  12. X.500 directory services, Telnet and TN3270 virtual terminals,
  13. and the Internet Gopher information system.
  14.  
  15. For those institutions not already connected to the network (80
  16. sites), the project has bought equipment, ordered leased lines
  17. from the Norwegian Telecom and will install it preconfigured with
  18. all services at the schools.  A Hewlett-Packard series 9000 model
  19. 705 will function as a postoffice, Domain Name System server,
  20. information server, and as a workstation. A HP ER Router will
  21. transfer TCP/IP traffic between the LAN and UNINETT.

  23. Both the UNIX machine and the router will be managed over the
  24. network from the computing centers at the universities. Network
  25. management is done by SNMP and UNIX management by Palantir
  26. (developed at the University in Oslo). UNIX software will be
  27. maintained using track. This is done to make it possible to
  28. operate a UNIX machine at sites with no UNIX knowledge.

  30. The network is organized with network hubs in each county
  31. connecting to the four Norwegian universities located in Oslo,
  32. Bergen, Trondheim, and Tromso.

  34. Most schools already has various Personal Computers and a local
  35. area network. UNINETT services will also be available on these
  36. machines using public domain TCP/IP programs or commercial
  37. products.  User support at the schools is done by the local
  38. computer staff, who is supported by the University computing
  39. centers. Training is given by UNINETT and the Universities.
