  7. Brazil has just completed the installation of TCP/IP backbone.
  8. The backbone consists of (mostly) 9.6 kbps dedicated lines
  9. interconnecting 11 major cities in the country: Brasilia, Rio de
  10. Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Porto Alegre, Belem, Fortaleza, Salvador,
  11. Belo Horizonte, Recife, Curitiba, and Florianopolis.  Links
  12. between Brasilia-Sao Paulo, Brasilia-Rio de Janeiro, and Sao
  13. Paulo-Rio de Janeiro are being upgraded to 64 kbps.  Three
  14. dedicated connections to the US also operate at 64 kbps and a
  15. link to Argentina will soon be installed.

  17. Routing has been done utilizing UNIX workstations, soon to be
  18. replaced by dedicated, multi-protocol routers.  An embryonic
  19. National Operations Center has started activities in Sao Paulo,
  20. while an Information Center is being set up in Rio de Janeiro.

  22. Another major activity carried out recently has had to do with
  23. computational and networking support for the Earth Summit (also
  24. known as UNCED'92 or RIO-92), the gigantic UN Conference held in
  25. Rio de Janeiro in June.  Such support has included:
  26.  
  27. - a dedicated, "closed" information system (implemented by DEC)
  28. for the OFFICIAL SPACE under the direct operation of the UN
  29. Conference organization staff.
  30.  
  31. - a metropolitan network to support activities of the GLOBAL
  32. FORUM (the forum of NGOs), with gateways to international
  33. networks such as PEACENET and ECONET through the ALTERNEX node.

  35. - the installation of two special-purpose nodes, one in Belem and
  36. another in Natal.  The Belem node centralizes communications in
  37. the Amazon Basin with neighboring countries, within the realm of
  38. activities of the Treaty of the Amazon signed in 1983.  The Natal
  39. node centralizes communications among Brazilian institutions
  40. participating in the so-called DRYNET project, which aims to
  41. interconnect research institutions in arid and semi-arid regions
  42. in Brazil (the Caatinga), Argentina (Gran Chaco), and Chile
  43. (Norte Chico)

  46. about what has been planned for AGENDA-21 (as the main result of
  47. the Earth Summit), can be found in the list

  49. networkers is the set of directives issued by UNCED'92 for the
  50. implementation of the so-called AGIS, the Agenda-21 Information
  51. System, which is intended to be distributed among several
  52. countries while being remotely accessible in an uniform way via
  53. networks.
