  7. Matrix News is a monthly paper newsletter about contextual issues
  8. related to computer networks; preferably issues that cross network,
  9. organizational, or political boundaries.

  11. The first issue included an article on "National Network Policy",
  12. which has been followed by articles such as, "Exactly What is the
  13. NREN?", by Jay Habegger, and by the guest editorials (called Martian
  14. Packets), "Encouraging Equitable Competition on the Internet", by
  15. Mitchell Kapor, "Public Institutions in an Electronic Society", by
  16. Steve Cisler, and "Walking the Beat in the Global Village", by Richard
  17. Civille.  Steve Jackson's "The Top Ten Media Errors About the SJ Games
  18. Raid", is also relevant.  The monthly Network Policy Updates have
  19. mentioned the first EARN connection to Moscow and the passing of the
  20. NREN bill.  Network policy is not just national, as indicated in R.R.
  21. Ronkin's "Global Cyberspace -- Who Needs It".

  23. Every issue attempts to draw connections between technology, politics,
  24. and community, ranging from Smoot Carl-Mitchell's "X.400 - Fact and
  25. Fancy", to John S. Quarterman's "Networks from Technology to
  26. Community", "Boundaries, Resources and the Law", "Which Network,
  27. and Why It Matters", and "Analogy is Not Identity".  We also print
  28. reports from networked communities, such as artists in "Cyber Art:
  29. The Art of Communication Systems", by Anna Couey or Billy Barron's
  30. "Libraries on the Matrix" and "BBSing Around the OuterNet".

  32. User and directory services are often covered, with the Martian Packet
  33. "On the Need to Develop Internet User Services", by Peter Deutsch
  34. There were MIDS reports on the CNI and NSF Directory Services
  35. workshops, and the articles, "Strategies for Finding People on
  36. Networks" and "Networks Are Volunteers".

  38. Issue 5 (August) was a theme issue on K-12 (Kindergarten-12th Grade)
  39. networking, with articles on KIDSNET, the electronic college
  40. classroom, and specific K-12 networking projects.  Issue 8 (November)
  41. examines networks in Argentina in depth and reviews the program
  42. netfind.
