  3. N-1-1-040.51  User Services

  8. As the Internet has rapidly developed to encompass a large number of
  9. internationally dispersed networks in academic and research fields,
  10. many new users of different backgrounds are added to the community.
  11. Buried deep within the heart of the Internet are countless servers
  12. providing information about everything from aerospace information to
  13. the weather.  However, few users on the Internet know where even a
  14. small fraction of this information can be found.  The reason is
  15. because it is globally scattered throughout the thousands of host
  16. machines connected to the network.  This growth has placed the user
  17. services provider in the difficult position of trying to provide much
  18. needed user support, while at the same time restructuring the user
  19. services' system to accommodate continued expansion.
  20.  
  21. Recent changes include the establishment of a User Services Area
  22. within the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).  This area provides
  23. an international forum for people interested in all levels of user
  24. services, to identify and initiate projects designed to improve the
  25. quality of the information available to users of the Internet.
  26. Interaction with other national and international user services
  27. entities began in 1991 with the creation of the User Services Area
  28. Council (USAC).  Currently, USAC's membership includes representation
  29. by Australia, Canada, Europe, Israel, Japan, and the United States.
  30. USAC's goals will be ongoing as the Internet evolves globally.

  32. One continuing goal of the User Services Area is to coordinate the
  33. development of user information services by providing documentation
  34. information and distribution for the Internet community.  With the
  35. "For Your Information" (FYI) series of "Request For Comments" (RFC),
  36. the User Services Area provides introductory and overview documents
  37. for network users.  Their purpose is to make available general
  38. information, rather than the protocol specifications or standards that
  39. is typical of other RFCs.  FYIs are allied to the RFC series of notes,
  40. but provides information about who does what on the Internet.  The FYI
  41. RFC series has proved a success since its initiation, and its goal is
  42. to continue to do so.
