  14. YUNAC is the major networking organization in Yugoslavia, which was set up in
  15. 1990 after two years of networking activities with  aim  to  care  for the
  16. services  provided to the end users. Members of YUNAC are Universities,
  17. Research Institutes from the Academic and Commercial world. The network is
  18. managed by Management Committee elected by the members of YUNAC Assembly. YUNAC
  19. is organized as limited company. YUNAC is a national member of RARE, the
  20. European Association of Research Networks and representative of Yugoslavia in
  21. COSINE and RIPE - The European Internet Network. YUNAC is naming authority for
  22. TLD .YU.

  24. Infrastructure

  26. YUNAC uses  as communication infrastructure leased lines (mainly 9.6 Kbits and
  27. some 48 Kbps) and PPSDN (Public Packet Switched Data Network). This
  28. infrastructure is used for multiprotocol services: DECnet (Phase IV), X.400 and
  29. NJE. All YUNAC nodes with X.400 services provide gateway services for e-mail to
  30. the DECNET nodes. The number of connected hosts is cca 300.

  32. YUNAC is connected via leased 64 Kbps line to the International X.25
  33. Infrastructure (IXI) run by RARE and COSINE. The connection is implemented on
  34. leased line between Wien and Ljubljana, Slovenia. The switch and WEP are
  35. connected to the PPSDN of Yugoslavia - JUPAK. The switch and WEP (Well Known
  36. Entry Point) are located in the YUNAC headquaters at the Jozef Stefan Institut
  37. in Ljubljana. The connection to Internet is currently available via lines and
  38. gateway services offered by DFN. The YUNAC switch provide TCP/IP over X.25
  39. connection to the European Internet Network (RIPE).

  43. The services offered to the end users  are:  electronic mail,  computer
  44. conferencing, transfer of data, directory services, remote login, and
  45. connection to the international networks EARN/BITNET, EUNET/USENET, Internet
  46. (U S) via gateways. Regular  information  service  connecting yugoslav users
  47. abroad to the domestic source  of  information  via e-mail and distribution
  48. lists is  also  working well (Rok Press, BEST etc).

  50. Other internationally connected networks in Yugoslavia
  51.  
  52. In Yugoslavia there are two additional networking activities which are parts of
  53. the international networks i.e EARN and EUnet. The entry point to EARN/BITNET
  54. network is located in Beograd. This entry point (an IBM machine located at the
  55. Statistical Office of Serbia)is connected with leased 9.6 Kbps line to Linz,
  56. Austria.  The EARN entry point in Beograd provides gateway services for e-mail
  57. to DECNET nodes trough leased line to a mvax machine (with PMDF and JNET sw)
  58. located on premises of the Electrotechnical Faculty of Beograd.

  60. The Eunet backbone for Yugoslavia is located in Ljubljana at Electrotechnical
  61. faculty of Ljubljana University. The backbone host uses PPSDN and dial
  62. facilities for connecting the EUnet backbone in Europe (Amsterdam). Gateway
  63. services are not provided. Other Eunet hosts in the country use mainly UUCP and
  64. dial up facilitees.

  66. The Slovenian PTT is offering also mail box services to commercial users on
  67. their host with X.400 facilities. This site is connected to the YUNAC WEP.

  70. All computers on YUNAC with X.400 facilities use X.400 address with an
  71. appropriate Internet-style domain addresses maping i.e :

  77. Warning!!
  78. Recently YUNAC had adopted a new addressing scheme. It will be announced in the
  79. near future (implementation to start from December 1.) In the RFC 822 form will
  80. disapear "ac.mail" !!

  82.  Future plans

  84. DNS for .YU was set up recently (Internet address 153.5.1.1). Current DNS for
  85. .YU from US will be moved in Europe. Currently an X.500 project is going on in
  86. cooperation with the Slovenian PTT. Implementation to be offered to the users
  87. next year.
