  6.                      WHAT IS THE INTERNET SOCIETY?
  7.

  9. The Internet Society is the international organization for global
  10. cooperation and coordination for the Internet and its internetworking
  11. technologies and applications.
  12.  
  13. WHO ARE ITS MEMBERS?
  14. Its members reflect the breadth of the entire Internet community and
  15. consist of individuals, corporations, non-profit organizations, and
  16. government agencies.
  17.  
  18. WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE?
  19. Its principal purpose is to maintain and extend the development and
  20. availability of the Internet and its associated technologies and 
  21. applications - both as an end in itself, and as a means of enabling 
  22. organizations, professions, and individuals worldwide to more effectively 
  23. collaborate, cooperate, and innovate in their respective fields and 
  24. interests.

  26. Its specific goals and purposes include:
  27.  
  28. a) development, maintenance, evolution, and dissemination of  
  29.    standards for the Internet and its internetworking technologies 
  30.    and applications;
  31.  
  32. b) growth and evolution of the Internet architecture;
  33.  
  34. c) maintenance and evolution of effective administrative processes
  35.    necessary for operation of the global Internet and internets;
  36.  
  37. d) education and research related to the Internet and internetworking;
  38.  
  39. e) harmonization of actions and activities at international levels 
  40.    to facilitate the development and availability of the Internet;
  41.  
  42. f) collection and dissemination of information related to the
  43.    Internet and internetworking, including histories and archives;
  44.  
  45. g) assisting technologically developing countries, areas, and peoples
  46.    in implementing and evolving their Internet infrastructure and use;
  47.  
  48. h) liaison with other organizations, governments, and the general
  49.    public for coordination, collaboration, and education in effecting
  50.    the above purposes.

  52. HOW DOES IT OPERATE?
  53. The Internet Society operates through its international Board of
  54. Trustees, its International Networking Conferences and developing
  55. country workshops, its regional and local chapters, its various
  56. standards and administrative bodies, its committees, and its
  57. secretariat.  The Board of Trustees is headed by a President with
  58. the assistance of several officers.  The Board consists of 18 eminent 
  59. individuals drawn from every region of the world - most of whom were 
  60. instrumental in creating and evolving different components of the 
  61. Internet and the technology.

  63. WHERE IS IT LOCATED?
  64. The permanent international headquarters and secretariat of the Society 
  65. is located at Reston VA USA and is headed by the Executive Director.
  66.  
  67. WHAT IS ITS LEGAL STATUS?
  68. The Internet Society is incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation,
  69. with tax-deductible status in Washington DC USA, near its headquarters 
  70. location.

  72. WHY WAS IT CREATED?
  73. The Internet Society was announced in June 1991 at an international
  74. networking conference in Copenhagen and brought into existence in January 
  75. 1992 by a worldwide cross-section of individuals and organizations who
  76. recognized that the Society was a critical component necessary to evolve 
  77. and globalize the Internet and internet technologies and applications, 
  78. and to enhance their availability and use on the widest possible scale.
