  5.      HOW DO I CONNECT TO THE INTERNET?
  6.

  8. Many alternatives exist for connecting to the 
  9. Internet depending on who you are and what you 
  10. want to do.  
  11.  
  12. It is important first to understand that the Internet 
  13. consists of many networks of computers con-
  14. nected together.  Each country typically has one or 
  15. more national public internet backbones which are 
  16. connected to each other through a variety of 
  17. global arrangements.  At regional and local levels, 
  18. there are tens of thousands of organizations of 
  19. every conceivable kind that have built their own 
  20. enterprise internets and connect them to the 
  21. national backbones via a network access service.
  22. Most of these second tier networks are operated 
  23. by organizations that provide Internet access to 
  24. their internal staff or specialize in providing 
  25. widespread public access to end-users. There are 
  26. basically two kinds of Internet end-user access 
  27. provided: 
  28.  
  29. o host access where end-users connect their 
  30.   computers to become part of the Internet, or
  31.  
  32. o terminal access where end users connect to a 
  33.   host computer which is directly connected to 
  34.   the Internet.  The computer terminal itself is 
  35.   not directly connected.
  36.  
  37. Lastly, many kinds of Email and on-line services 
  38. provide gateway access for messages to their 
  39. customers.
  40.  
  41. WHAT ARE MY BASIC OPTIONS AND REQUIREMENTS?
  42.  
  43. 1. Network access assumes you have a LAN or 
  44. WAN that support TCP/IP protocols.  Such 
  45. networks are generally owned and maintained by 
  46. organizations to tie together their information 
  47. resources and support host and terminal access. 
  48. The chief option is usually the bandwidth of the 
  49. access (e.g., from 14.4 to 1500 kbit/s).  The cus-
  50. tomer must also acquire the circuit to the Internet 
  51. access providerÆs point of presence.  Some provid-
  52. ers allow resale of the access service to third 
  53. parties or the public.
  54.  
  55. 2. Host access assumes you have a computer and 
  56. software that can support TCP/IP protocols and 
  57. potentially provides the full range and power of 
  58. Internet services limited only by the capability of 
  59. your computer.  Although very good, easy to use 
  60. software has recently become available even for 
  61. PCs and Macs, host access Internet connection 
  62. generally presume a modicum of computer liter-
  63. acy.  The primary options are generally the 
  64. method of access (such as attachment to a Local 
  65. Area Network, local dialup, 800 dialup, ISDN, or 
  66. CATV data service), protocol supported (e.g., 
  67. SLIP, CSLIP, or PPP), and POP server services.

  69. 3. Terminal access assumes only that you have a 
  70. computer with a modem and simple "asyn-
  71. chronous" communications software that allows 
  72. operation as a terminal.  The primary option is 
  73. generally the kinds of services provided (e.g., 
  74. generally primarily Email, and may include FTP, 
  75. Telnet, or text-based Gopher services to the pro-
  76. viderÆs host computer).  Binary files can only be 
  77. moved to your computer through additional file 
  78. transfer steps or encoding schemes.

  80. 4. Gateway access assumes only that you have the 
  81. ability to use the services of a particular Email or 
  82. on-line services provider - however it is done.

  84. HOW DO I GET CONNECTED?
  85.  
  86. o Choose the type of access that best meets 
  87. your capabilities and needs as described 
  88. above.  
  89.  
  90. o Find the access providers that serve your 
  91. area and determine services, costs, and sup-
  92. port that meet your requirements. A pro-
  93. vider list is available upon request from the 
  94. Internet Society.
  95.  
  96. o Obtain the necessary software for your com-
  97. puter system and your selected access serv-
  98. ice.  Network and host access require 
  99. TCP/IP software.  Terminal or gateway ac-
  100. cess generally require only common asyn-
  101. chronous communications software.  Some 
  102. gateway access providers may have their 
  103. own proprietary software.  A software list is 
  104. available upon request from the Internet So-
  105. ciety.

  107. HOW DO I GET MORE INFORMATION?
  108.  
  109. Many excellent reference and guide books on the 
  110. Internet, its technologies and applications have 
  111. become available in bookstores and libraries.  
  112. Some also include basic software.  Periodicals are 
  113. also available by subscription.  The Internet Soci-
  114. etyÆs membership publications and conferences 
  115. provide current comprehensive information and 
  116. notices about a broad range of worldwide Internet 
  117. developments.
