  1. The Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center (CERT/CC) has
  2. established a new Internet mailing list named CERT-TOOLS.
  3.  
  4. The purpose of this new mailing list is to encourage the exchange of
  5. information on security tools and security techniques.  The list
  6. should not be used for security problem reports.
  7.  
  8. The CERT/CC has found that many sites have developed tools and
  9. techniques to improve the security of their systems (e.g. tools to
  10. assist users' selection of passwords that are difficult to guess,
  11. account management techniques, monitors that help detect unauthorized
  12. system access).  Also, several tool developers have expressed an
  13. interest in sharing their work with others.  We hope this mailing list
  14. will spawn new security tool development and allow individual sites to
  15. take advantage of existing work.

  17. The mailing list will not be moderated and the CERT/CC will not
  18. formally review, evaluate, or endorse the tools and techniques
  19. described.  The decision to use the tools and techniques described is
  20. the responsibility of each user or organization and we encourage each
  21. organization to thoroughly evaluate new tools and techniques before
  22. installation or use.

  24. Membership is restricted to system programmers, system administrators
  25. and others with a legitimate interest in the development of computer
  26. security tools.  If you would like to be considered for inclusion,
  27. please send mail to:
  28.         cert-tools-request@cert.sei.cmu.edu
  29. You will receive confirmation mail when you have been placed on the
  30. list.

  32. We ask that the mailing list not be used for file transfers.  If you
  33. have a tool or technique that you would like to share, please mail a
  34. description of the tool or technique to the mailing list and describe
  35. how others can acquire the tool or obtain additional information. The
  36. CERT/CC is planning to collect many of the tools and will make the
  37. archive available via anonymous ftp on the cert.sei.cmu.edu system.
