  2. NIC stands for Network Information Center.  A NIC is a place where users
  3. can discover information about specific uses of the network.
  4.  
  5. NICs can be anywhere in the Internet.  For example, a campus or a
  6. corporation should have a Network Information Center for its own users. 
  7. A mid-level network  should have a NIC for its customers.  A U.S. national
  8. NIC is funded by the NSF and called the InterNIC.  At each different level,
  9. the NIC will contain information that is of interest to the target user
  10. community.

  12. There can be discipline specific NICs.  An example of this would be a NIC
  13. with agricultural information.  Different organizations or government
  14. bodies could provide information of interest to their members or
  15. constituents.  Generally, a NIC will list information on what to do on the
  16. Internet as well as specific local information such as newsletters,
  17. popular software, etc.
