  15.             The DDN Network Information  Center  (NIC)  assists  Defense
  16.             Data  Network  (DDN)  users  and  potential  subscribers  in
  17.             obtaining pertinent information about the DDN and the Inter-
  18.             net.
  19.  
  20.             The NIC provides the  following  databases  and  information
  21.             servers:

  23.             +    WHOIS registry of users, hosts, domains, and networks
  24.  
  25.             +    NIC/QUERY browsing system
  26.  
  27.             +    TACNEWS server
  28.  
  29.             +    SERVICE electronic mail server
  30.  
  31.             The NIC provides host  name  translation  tables,  maintains
  32.             domain  name system server files, assigns IP network numbers
  33.             and autonomous system numbers, registers network users,  and
  34.             issues  MILNET TAC access cards.  The NIC is the site of the
  35.             DDN Security Coordination Center (SCC).  The NIC is also the
  36.             source  of  DDN  documents and the complete Internet Request
  37.             For Comments (RFC) series and index.

  39.             The NIC maintains a toll-free hotline from 6 a.m. to 5  p.m.
  40.

  43.             experiencing  problems  with TAC login, or who have requests
  44.             for NIC services, are encouraged to call.
