  7. Minutes of the User Services Working Group (USWG)

  9. A current report on the IETF User Services Area activities, including
  10. working groups coming to closure, new working groups starting up, new
  11. publications, and current user services-related Internet-Drafts was
  12. presented at the start of the session.

  14. It was reported that the IAFA Working Group will soon conclude; Pat
  15. Smith (NISI co-chair) and Ellen Hoffman (USERDOC2 co-chair) have
  16. resigned as working group chairs; and Mark Prior has become co-chair of
  17. TRAINMAT, along with Jill Foster.

  49. A short review of a proposed draft, ``A Primer on Internet and TCP/IP
  50. Tools,'' was conducted.  The working group consensus of this draft is
  51. that it is not a primer, but rather, a document for a first-time systems
  52. engineer.  It is not broad enough, and not for a novice user.  The table
  53. of contents was considered useful, but most participants felt that the
  54. document should start with Chapter 4 and go forward.  It was deemed more
  55. appropriate that this draft could be worked on and submitted as the
  56. update to FYI 7 (``FYI on Questions and Answers:  Answers to Commonly
  57. Asked `Experienced Internet User' Questions``), if the authors would
  58. agree to this suggestion.

  60. Scott Williamson and Mark Kosters gave a slide presentation on Referral
  61. WHOIS Protocol (RWHOIS). (The slides follow these minutes.)  The
  62. presentation included discussion of what is RWHOIS, why build RWHOIS,
  63. how is RHOIS different from X.500 and WHOIS++, and the complimentary
  64. existence of RWHOIS and WHOIS++.  The proposed protocol development of
  65. RWHOIS will be nested in Tim Howes' Access and Synchronization of the
  66. Internet Directory Working Group (ASID) (currently a BOF in the
  67. Applications Area), and functionality, requirements, informational
  68. document developments, etc., in the User Services Area.

  70. Joyce K. Reynolds was renominated to serve on the Internet Engineering
  71. Steering Group (IESG) as User Services Area Director for the next two
  72. years.  Joyce opened the rest of the session to discussion and focus of
  73. where the USWG and the User Services Area would like to proceed in the
  74. next two years.

  76. The User Services Area Council (USAC) proposed and presented six points
  77. that they felt were important to focus on in the next two years (listed
  78. as most important first):

  81.   1. Tighten/clarify the mission
  82.   2. Higher visibility for the activities
  83.   3. Getting more people involved (i.e., a target audience)
  84.   4. Why should they come
  85.   5. How to spread the word (USV-Web)
  86.   6. Make better use of existing facilities

  89. A message will be sent to the us-wg list for continued input and
  90. discussion about this USWG discussion.  It was noted that the us-wg list
  91. is not very active.  It should be used as a forum for continued input on
  92. the scope of the User Services Area.  We ran out of time to fully define
  93. and analyze the points noted above.  The list presented below identifies
  94. the USWG Seattle participants that have volunteered to work with Joyce
  95. in continuing to define, develop, and implement the ideas put forward
  96. for the following tasks:
