  25. Description of Working Group:

  27. The Uniform Resource Identifiers Working Group is chartered to
  28. define a set of standards for the encoding of system-independent
  29. resource location and identification information for the use of
  30. Internet information services.
  31.  
  32. This working group is expected to produce a set of documents that
  33. specify standard representations of Uniform Resource Locators
  34. (URLs) for encoding location and
  35. access information across multiple information systems, Unique Resource
  36. Serial Numbers (URSNs) which specify a standardized method for encoding
  37. unique resource identification information for Internet resources, and
  38. Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) which specify a standardized
  39. method for encoding combined resource identification and location
  40. information systems to be used for resource discovery and access
  41. systems in an Internet environment.  Such standards
  42. are expected to build upon the document discussed at the UDI BOF
  43. session held during the 24th IETF meeting in Boston
  44.  
  45. Such a set of standards will provide a framework that allows the
  46. Internet user to specify the location and access information for files
  47. and other resources on the Internet, users and network-based
  48. tools to uniquely identify specific resources on the Internet, and
  49. the creation and operation of resource discovery and access
  50. systems for the Internet.  The security of such resource discovery
  51. services will also be considered to be an integral part of the work
  52. of this group.

  55.  Goals and Milestones: 
  56.  
  57.      Done       Review and approve the charter making any changes deemed 
  58.                 necessary. Examine the scope of the recommended documents. 
  59.                 Review the first draft of a proposal for Uniform Resource 
  60.                 Locators already available.                                    
  61.  
  62.      Done       Submit URL document as an Internet-Draft.  Review additional 
  63.                 draft documents and determine necessary revisions.  Follow up 
  64.                 discussion will occur on mailing list.

  66.      Done       Submit the URL document to the IESG for publication as a 
  67.                 Proposed Standard RFC.
