  30. Description of Working Group:

  32. The purpose of this group is to develop or adopt procedures, mechanisms
  33. and protocols to support user roaming among groups of Internet service
  34. providers (ISPs).  This is different from, but related to, the work of
  35. the IP Routing for Wireless/Mobile Hosts Working Group (mobileip) in
  36. that the roamops group is not concerned  with the movement of hosts or
  37. subnets, but of users.  In the near term, the goals of the group will
  38. be to produce an architectural document describing the basic mechanisms
  39. required to support user roaming.  A repository for documentation
  40. describing current roaming implementations will also be maintained.
  41.  
  42. In addition, the group will address interoperability among ISPs and
  43. roaming users by standardizing such items as network usage data
  44. exchange (including the content, format and protocols involved), phone
  45. book attributes and exchange/update protocols, inter-ISP authentication
  46. mechanisms and exploring in depth the security issues involved with
  47. roaming.  This work is expected to consist mainly of new or revised
  48. procedures and application-layer protocols.
  49.  
  50. Any and all business issues regarding the operation of an ISP roaming
  51. network (such as settlement, business and billing methods) are
  52. specifically NOT in the scope of the roamops Working Group and will not
  53. be discussed.

  55. The group will work closely with other IETF Working Groups (including
  56. mobileip, radius, nasreqng saag and cat) to identify issuesto which the
  57. roamops group should attend, as well as to assure their work does not
  58. make roaming unnecessarily difficult or impossible.
  59.  
  60. The utmost goal of the group will to make sure, by any means necessary,
  61. that it produces documents of high quality that are useful to the IETF
  62. community.
