  28. Description of Working Group:
  29.  
  30. The RMON MIB Working Group is chartered to define a set of managed
  31. objects for remote monitoring of networks.  These objects will be
  32. the minimum necessary to provide the ability to monitor multiple
  33. network layers of traffic in remote networks; providing fault,
  34. configuration, and performance management, and will be consistent
  35. with the SNMP framework and existing SNMP standards.
  36.  
  37. The working group will consider existing MIB modules that define
  38. objects which support similar management, e.g., RFC 1271 and
  39. RFC 1513 and efforts in other areas, e.g., the accounting and
  40. operational statistics activities.  It is possible that this RMON
  41. will not be backwards compatible with existing RMON RFCs, but the
  42. reasons for any such incompatibility will be well documented.
  43.  
  44. The following list of features for this RMON has been previously
  45. discussed in relation to existing RMON functionality and is included
  46. to focus these RMON activities.  It is recognized that other issues
  47. may be considered and that certain of the following issues may not
  48. be part of the final specification:
  49.  
  50. 1) Protocol-type distribution through all seven layers of the ISO
  51.    model.
  52.  
  53. 2) Address mapping - Network Layer to Data Link (MAC) Layer and 
  54. vice-versa.
  55.  
  56. 3) Mechanisms that enable the detection of duplicate addresses or
  57.    address changes.
  58.  
  59. 4) The relationship of the Manager-to-Manager MIB in SNMPv2 and
  60.    associated RMON alarm related activities.
  61.  
  62. 5) Host Table for the Network Layer and the Transport Layer.
  63.  
  64. 6) Provide a simple mechanism for the specification of event/trap
  65.    destinations
  66.  
  67. 7) Address the issue of the filter mechanism being constrained by
  68.    bit-to-bit packet matching, which presents a problem with variable-
  69.    length packets.
  70.  
  71. 8) Consider how RMON could benefit network security, for example:
  72.    using the RMON History to provide an accountability and audit
  73.    trail up to the Transport Layer.
  74.  
  75. 9) Provide performance metrics for the client-server environment.
  76.  
  77. 10) Concerns of hardware implementation should be considered.  For 
  78. example,
  79.    optimization of the filter and capture group could reduce the cost of
  80.    the CPU and improve performance.
