  25. Description of Working Group:

  27. The Router Discovery Working Group is chartered to adopt or develop a
  28. protocol that Internet hosts may use to dynamically discover the
  29. addresses of operational neighboring gateways.  The group is expected
  30. to propose its chosen protocol as a standard for gateway discovery in
  31. the Internet.
  32.  
  33. The work of this group is distinguished from that of the Host
  34. Configuration Working Group in that this group is concerned with the
  35. dynamic tracking of router availability by hosts rather than the
  36. initialization of various pieces of host state (which might include
  37. router addresses) at host-startup time.

  40.  Goals and Milestones:

  42.    Oct 88       Gather implementation and operational experience, revise the 
  43.                 specification to reflect lessons learned, and submit the 
  44.                 protocol for Draft Standard.                                   
  45.  
  46.      Done       Created Working Group; established and advertised mailing list.
  47.                 Initiated email discussion to identify existing and proposed 
  48.                 protocols, for router discovery.                               
  49.  
  50.      Done       Held first meeting in Palo Alto.  Reviewed 9 candidate 
  51.                 protocols, and agreed on a hybrid of cisco's GDP and an ICMP 
  52.                 extension proposed by Deering.                                 
  53.  
  54.      Done       Held second meeting in Tallahassee.  Reviewed the proposed 
  55.                 protocol and discussed a number of open issues.                
  56.  
  57.      Done       Held third meeting in Pittsburgh.  Discussed and resolved 
  58.                 several issues that had been raised by email since the last 
  59.                 meeting.  Draft specification of router discovery protocol to 
  60.                 be ready by next meeting. Experimental implementations to be 
  61.                 started.

  63.      Done       Meet in Vancouver.  Review draft specification, and determine 
  64.                 any needed revisions.  Evaluate results of experimental 
  65.                 implementations and assign responsibility for additional 
  66.                 experiments, as required.  Submit the specification for 
  67.                 publication as a Proposed Standard shortly after the meeting.

  69.      Done       Revise specification as necessary, based on field experience.  
  70.                 Ask the IESG to elevate the protocol to Draft Standard status.
