  14. The ``NIC Guidelines'' Document
  15.  
  16. The ``NIC Guidelines'' document still needs to be issued as an
  17. Internet-Draft so that wider comments can be gathered in preparation for
  18. issuing the document as an update to RFC 1302.  The document has been
  19. updated from the version distributed in Seattle, but that new version
  20. has not yet been made available on the net for feedback.  The document
  21. will be formatted and issued as an Internet-Draft.  It is the formatting
  22. step that has held this up.

  25. ``Outreach'' Project
  26.  
  27. Also pending is an informal ``outreach'' project designed to get some
  28. feedback on the needs of NIC personnel.  This has been re-connected to
  29. updating the NIC profiles templates, as described next.  Basically, as
  30. part of the update or related to letting people know about it,
  31. volunteers would call two or three sites and ask them three or four
  32. questions.  The questions would be along the lines of ``are you familiar
  33. with IETF/NISI?'', ``have you considered participating in the IETF?'',
  34. ``if not, why not?'', ``does your NIC have any needs that a group such
  35. as IETF/USV/NISI could help address?''  The aim is to find out real
  36. information rather than just guessing what ``customer requirements'' are
  37. for a group like NISI.

  40. The NIC Profiles Templates
  41.  
  42. Susan Calcari of the InterNIC reported on progress made in transferring
  43. the NIC profiles templates, which contain contact information for
  44. various net information centers, from Merit to the DS InterNIC, on
  45. progress they have made in updating the information, and on next steps
  46. needed for that project.  More than half of the 59 current templates
  47. have been updated by the InterNIC, leaving only about 23 to be updated.
  48. The templates are available via Gopher, FTP, and the Web.

  50. There is also the question of trolling for new additions to the
  51. information once the current stuff has been verified.  Discussion took
  52. place on how to do that, and general agreement was that a good starting
  53. place would be the usual mailing lists (e.g., net-happenings) to let
  54. people know about the collection and how they could contribute.  Susan
  55. noted especially a dearth of NICs related to universities/colleges and
  56. said she could do some outreach there.

  58. The InterNIC has agreed to host this information for the time being on
  59. their server in a central manner.  After the service is a little more
  60. robust, we can explore the need to distribute the upkeep load, possibly
  61. via something like their RWHOIS server.

  64. InterNIC Starter Kit
  65.  
  66. Susan also discussed the InterNIC starter kit being developed by the IS
  67. InterNIC and which will be made available for use and customization by
  68. other NICs.  The starter kit is designed to be a hard copy document to
  69. be sent to those people who are just considering joining the Internet,
  70. but who probably do not yet really understand what the net is.  It will
  71. have 1-2 pages each on several topics, including an Internet definition,
  72. Internet resources, getting connected FAQ, network tools, and such.

  77. Other topics discussed were the USV Web page (a reprise discussion from
  78. USWG), and the idea that a well-known place for net
  79. diagrams/maps/presentation materials would be useful.
