  6. Minutes of the Network Information Services Infrastructure Working Group
  7. (NISI)

  9. Thanks, once again, to Marsha Perrott for providing her notes.  These
  10. minutes follow the agenda items.

  13. Review of Where We Are
  14.  
  15. The group agreed they were in Houston.
  16.  
  17. Actually, for benefit of newbies, of which there were several, the group
  18. reviewed the Amsterdam meeting (since even several oldbies had trouble
  19. making that one!).  The discussion primarily centered on how the group
  20. got into writing its current document.  It was mentioned how in
  21. Amsterdam there was agreement to split the one diagram illustrating NIC
  22. relationships into three views:  US-centric; AP-centric; Euro-centric.

  25. Review ``Regional'' NIC Diagrams

  27. Does the group agree on these?  Discussion was defered.

  30. Plan Final Touches on Relationships Document

  32. The diagrams David Conrad from APNIC had shared were shown.  Much
  33. discussion *again* on the problems with diagraming (even though the
  34. scope of what the group was trying to picture had been narrowed).  It
  35. was agreed to punt the diagrams and just go with short descriptions on
  36. the types of NICs that exist.  A registration hierarchy diagram will be
  37. included, and more a more complete discussion on the relationship and
  38. distinctions between registration services and information services
  39. within a NIC will take place.  It is possible that a diagram for Europe
  40. will be included (but that remains to be seen).

  42. April will try to come up with this with input from the list.  Debbie
  43. Hamilton, David Conrad, and Scott Paisley will help review.

  46. Discuss Need/Plan to Update RFC 1302/FYI 12
  47.  
  48. There was basic agreement that this document, ``Building a Network
  49. Information Services Infrastructure,'' should be updated.  Specific
  50. volunteers were April, Debbie, and Dave Livingston.  It is not clear
  51. that a date was put on this, but the Chair would like to be pretty far
  52. along by the March IETF in Seattle.

  57.    o Finish NICs document by Seattle (April, Debbie, David Conrad)
  58.    o Start update of RFC 1302 by Seattle (April, Debbie, Dave

  62. NISI Scope/Liaison Discussion
  63.  
  64. This was the fun part.  Basically, it seems like for the last few
  65. sessions, NISI has been operating on more of a ``top down'' approach
  66. than a grassroots ``bottom up'' approach, and that is not the IETF way.
  67. So, the new attendees were asked what they had expected when they walked
  68. in, and what had not been talked about that they felt were issues for
  69. which they wanted a forum.  This was all by way of scoping out what
  70. NISI, as a forum for NICs, was best suited for.  One idea has been to
  71. fold NISI and start up another working group whenever the surge seems to
  72. warrant it.

  74. Here are some of the types of things people mentioned they were looking
  75. for:

  78.    o Role models of ``good'' NICs including:
  79.  
  80.       -  Guidelines for how to put things online
  81.       -  How to set services up in a unified way
  82.  
  83.    o Methods of collecting and disseminating information
  84.  
  85.    o A list of NIC addresses and contact information and ideas of what
  86.      they had online
  87.  
  88.    o More action on the NIC Forum list
  89.  
  90.    o Guidelines for setting up registration services at a NIC
  91.  
  92.    o Methods of measuring quality of service (except evidently that term
  93.      can't be used for some political reason :-)
  94.  
  95.    o Cooperating to maintain the information mesh
  96.

  98. Some of these ideas are being worked.  The NIC Profiles (registry of
  99. NICs) idea came up again, so some discussion was had on how to best keep
  100. that up to date and make it more accessible.  The InterNIC has had some
  101. ideas on how to collect and offer this information.  Susan Calcari, Pat
  102. Smith, and Glenn Mansfield are talking about how to best offer this
  103. information, and, if done via X.500, how to get schema registered and
  104. recognized.

  106. Jill Foster described how the EuroGopher folks (who are now handling
  107. more than just gopher issues) are working to distributed information
  108. services within Europe (as a point re:  the last bullet above).
  109.  
  110. It was a good discussion, but no particular item blazed forth as the
  111. obvious thing for NISI.

  116. Susan Calcari described the upcoming (now gone :-) NICFest.  She
  117. mentioned that there are currently several forums for NIC-types, none of
  118. which gets everyone, so there is a need to make sure the forums somehow
  119. work together (a la Joyce and Jill keeping each other informed on
  120. similar IETF and RARE ISUS activities).
