  24. Description of Working Group:

  26. The NISI Working Group will explore the requirements for common, shared
  27. Internet-wide network information services. The goal is to develop an
  28. understanding for what is required to implement an information services
  29. ``infrastructure'' for the Internet.  The work will begin with existing
  30. NIC functions and services and should build upon work already being
  31. done within the Internet community. A primary goal of the group is to
  32. facilitate the development of relationships between NICs that will
  33. result in the presentation of a seamless user support service.  NISI
  34. will work with all NICs, including the InterNIC, to achieve the goal of
  35. a fully-functioning, cooperative mesh of worldwide NICs.  In addition
  36. to creating policies for interaction, NISI will address areas such as
  37. common information formats, methods of access, user interface, and
  38. issues relating to security and privacy of Internet databases.

  42.      Done       Review draft for phase 1 and begin discussions for completing 
  43.                 the second phase which is to define a basic set of `cooperative
  44.                 agreements' which will allow NICs to work together more 
  45.                 effectively to serve users.

  47.      Done       Revised draft document ready for working group review. Document
  48.                 defines NIC functions and suggests some standardizations for 
  49.                 NIC  services, as well as offers new mechanisms for exchanging 
  50.                 information between NICs.

  52.      Done       Document submitted as Internet-Draft for comment from a wider 
  53.                 Internet audience.

  55.      Done       Working group discussed current Internet-Draft and suggested 
  56.                 minor revisions. Decision made to continue Working Group 
  57.                 activity beyond this document.

  59.      Done       First document released as Informational RFC. Outline and 
  60.                 discuss new NISI tasks at IETF meeting.

  62.      Done       Write a document explaining the security issues of privacy and 
  63.                 accuracy in Internet databases. Publish as an Informational
