  28. The Network Fax Working Group is chartered to explore issues
  29. involved with the transmission and receipt of facsimilies across TCP/IP
  30. networks and to develop recommended standards for facsimile
  31. transmission across the Internet.  The Group is also intended to serve
  32. as a coordinating forum for people doing experimentation in this area
  33. to attempt to maximize the possibility for interoperability among
  34. network fax projects.
  35.  
  36. Among the issues that need to be resolved are what actual
  37. protocol(s) will be used to do the actual data transmission
  38. between hosts, architectural models for the integration of fax
  39. machines into the existing internet, what types of data encoding
  40. should be supported, how IP host address to phone number conversion
  41. should be done and associated issues of routing, and development of a
  42. gateway system that will allow existing Group 3 and Group 4 fax
  43. machines to operate in a network environment.

  45. It is expected that the output of the Working Group will be one
  46. or more RFC's documenting recommended solutions to the above questions
  47. and possibly also describing some actual implementations.  The life of
  48. the Working Group is expected to be 18-24 months.

  50. It is also hoped that some fax vendors, as well as the
  51. networking community and fax gateway developers, will be brought into
  52. the effort.

  56.  Goals and Milestones:

  58.      Done       Review  and  approve Charter  making  any  changes deemed 
  59.                 necessary.   Refine definition of scope of  work  to  be  
  60.                 accomplished  and       initial set of RFC's to be developed.  
  61.                 Begin working on                framework for solution.        
  62.  
  63.      Done       Continue work  on  definition  of issues  and protocols.       
  64.                 Work to be conducted on mailing  list.

  66.      Done       First  draft  of  RFC  to be completed.  To be discussed at 
  67.                 IETF      meeting and revised as necessary.

  69.      Done       Continue revisions based  on comments   received   and   submit
  70.                 to  IESG  for  publication as RFC.
