  24. Description of Working Group:

  26. This working group will extend the OSPF routing protocol so that it
  27. will be able to efficiently route IP multicast packets. This will
  28. produce a new (multicast) version of the OSPF protocol, which will be
  29. as compatible as possible with the present version (packet formats and
  30. most of the algorithms will hopefully remain unaltered).

  32.  Goals and Milestones:

  34.      Done       Review outline of proposed changes to OSPF.  Identify any 
  35.                 unresolved issues and, if possible, resolve them.              
  36.  
  37.      Done       Become familiar with the IGMP protocol as documented in RFC 
  38.                 1112.  Survey existing work on multicast routing, in 
  39.                 particular, Steve       Deering's paper ``Multicast Routing in 
  40.                 Internetworks and Extended LANs''. Identify areas where OSPF 
  41.                 must be extended to support multicast  routing.  Identify 
  42.                 possible points of contention.

  44.      Done       The group should have a draft specification.  Discuss the 
  45.                 specification and make any necessary changes.  Discuss 
  46.                 implementation methods, using as an example, the existing BSD 
  47.                 OSPF code, written by Rob Coltun of the University of Maryland.

  49.      Done       Report on implementations of the new multicast OSPF.  Fix any 
  50.                 problems in the specification that were found by the 
  51.                 implementations.

  53.      Done       Submit the MOSPF Specification to the IESG as a Proposed 
  54.                 Standard.

  56.    Jun 96       Update MOSPF to reflect current usage, document 
  57.                 interoperability between implementations, and submit to the 
  58.                 IESG for consideration as a Draft Standard.
