  6. Minutes of the Modem Management Working Group (MODEMMGT)

  9. Summary
  10.  
  11. The third meeting of MODEMMGT was attended by twenty or so people.  The
  12. Network Management Area Director noted that the group was behind
  13. schedule and would be given until January 31, 1994 to reach consensus or
  14. the working group would be disbanded.
  15.  
  16. The group discussed various ways to meet this deadline and agreed to
  17. pursue a phased approach.  The group will focus on a MIB of core objects
  18. and defer other objects to a MIB of extensions.
  19.  
  20. It was suggested that the group reconsider the work done by the CCITT
  21. (now ITU) known as V.im (now V.58).  It was agreed that V.58 would be
  22. considered a super-set of objects from which the set of core objects
  23. would be taken.  Objects could be renamed and be explicitly mapped to
  24. the corresponding V.58 object with notes in the description.  Changes in
  25. structure would be made only where justified.

  27. The structure of the working group's draft of the core objects was
  28. analyzed.  It was agreed that it would be reduced to five groups of
  29. objects.  The objects within each group will be refined by the authors.

  34.  mdmLineInterfaceGroup Configuration and state of line interface
  35.  mdmDTEInterfaceGroup  Configuration and state of DTE interface

  37.  mdmStatisticsGroup    Statistics of the modem

  43.    o The group agreed NOT to include leased line functionality in the
  44.      core MIB.
  45.  
  46.    o The mdmIDGroup corresponds to the VSeriesDcePackage in V.58
  47.  
  48.    o The mdmDataCompressionGroup was dropped from the core MIB.
  49.  
  50.    o The mdmCallControlGroup and mdmCallStateGroup were merged into the
  51.      mdmCallControlGroup like V.58
  52.  
  53.    o The mdmSignalConverterGroup was dropped from the core MIB.
  54.  
  55.    o The mdmIDModel object was expanded to include the revision, serial
  56.      number, hardware revision, and firmware revision like
  57.      manufacturerID in V.58.

  59.    o Objects mdmIDHardwareSerNum, mdmIDHardwareRev, mdmIDFirmwareRev are
  60.      dropped from the draft.

  62.    o mdmIDCountry was deferred to an extension MIB.
  63.  
  64.    o mdmLineCapabilitiesTable was considered.  The documented technique
  65.      is different from V.58.  The merits of this deviation were argued
  66.      but to resolved.  Steve Waldbusser will defend the draft method in
  67.      a discussion on the mailing list.  Alan Clark will argue for a
  68.      method more in line with V.58 on the mailing list.

  70.    o The mdmStats group was compared to V.58.  The working group wanted
  71.      to deviate from V.58 and leave the statistics in a separate group.

  74. The Next Step

  76. The five groups of core objects will be divided among the authors for
  77. further editing.  Each group will be treated individually on the mailing
  78. list.  The groups must be carefully evaluated and extensively discussed
  79. on the mailing list.  Thanks to those who have contributed time and
  80. expertise to this project.
