CURRENT_MEETING_REPORT_
Reported by Steve Deering/Xerox PARC and Dave Johnson/CMU
Minutes of the IP Routing for Wireless/Mobile Hosts Working Group
(MOBILEIP)
Administrative Matters
Steve Deering announced his resignation as co-chair of the working
group. Greg Minshall will continue as sole chair for now, and may
select a new co-chair in the near future.
Meta Issues
John Penners suggested splitting the Foreign Agent-Home Agent protocol
specification from the Mobile Host-Foreign Agent protocol specification.
It was John's opinion that the FA-HA protocol could be agreed upon
immediately, while allowing multiple different MH-FA protocols to be
considered or implemented. There was no immediate consensus in favor of
John's suggestion.
Yakov Rekhter suggested a number of changes to the mobile IP
architecture and/or specification:
o Observe the distinction between functional decomposition and
physical instantiation. Example functions that might be
instantiated in different ways are:
- temporary address assignment
- tunnel end-point
- accounting
o Allow tunneling from the mobile host back to the Home Agent (i.e.,
MH ! [FA] ! HA ! CH). Motivation: desire to maintain a two-way,
encrypted tunnel between an MH and its home base. This suggestion
triggered much discussion, with the rough consensus being that it
would be a valuable option.
o Extend the ICMP Router Discovery protocol to handle mobility
beaconing, rather than inventing a new protocol. Most people
present thought this was an excellent suggestion, and it was
adopted. Note that this effects only the beaconing and
solicitation functions of Mobile IP, not the other control
messages---those other messages will still be carried by UDP,
rather than ICMP, as agreed in previous meetings.
o Support ``tunneling without encapsulation.'' This is a scheme in
which, instead of encapsulating a packet to get it to a mobile
host, the HA simply replaces the original destination address with
the temporary remote address of the MH; since the MH also knows its
own home address, it can restore the packet to its original form
for local processing. There was no enthusiasm for this proposal.
o Support ``home subnets'' as logical entities only, with no
associated physical link---ARP and local ICMP messages are
ill-suited for the mobile environment. The group was not willing
to give up the option for MHs to have a physical home subnet, but
agreed to move the physical home subnet procedures and list of
problems/hazards to an appendix of the Mobile IP specification.
Charlie Perkins suggested that the procedures for ``ad-hoc networking''
be deleted from the base specification. The group agreed to this
suggestion.
Section-by-Section Review of Current Draft
We then engaged (for the next session and a half) in a
section-by-section review of the (then) current Internet-Draft. We did
not finish the detailed discussion of the complete current basic draft.
After running out of time in the meeting, we decided instead to continue
the discussion of the draft on the mailing list. The draft editor
should produce a revised version of the draft in about two weeks,
incorporating the changes discussed at the meeting. We will then hold
an open discussion period on the mailing list, where comments will be
accepted on the revised version of the portion of the draft that was
discussed at the meeting. After some reasonable period of time (perhaps
one week) for these comments, we will then move on to similarly discuss
each remaining section of the draft on the mailing list, one at a time.
