CURRENT_MEETING_REPORT_
Reported by Mark Laubach/Hewlett-Packard
Minutes of the IP Over Asynchronous Transfer Mode Working Group (IPATM)
Agenda
The agenda was bashed to be the following:
o Introduction---working group work plan and dormancy
o Default MTU draft status
o IP multicast statement
o ATM forum update
o LAN emulation introduction
o Firewall security discussion
o Conventional IP over ATM model
o Implementation guide
Working Group Dormancy After Toronto
After the Toronto meeting, IPATM will go ``dormant.'' Current work
includes implementation guide, multicast, and security. These items
should be completed either before or at the Toronto meeting.
ATM needs to ``grow up.'' Implementation experience must be gathered to
support Proposed Standard to Draft Standard status elevation for
RFC 1483, RFC 1577, and the MTU draft. Discussions will continue on the
mailing list. The framework to guide the post-classical work needs to
be developed.
In Toronto, there will be one working group session that will only focus
on any open work items. Informational exchange will be done outside the
meeting, e.g., on the mailing list or in BOF sessions.
ATM Forum Update - Drew Perkins
Drew Perkins is our new ATM Forum liaison. The ATM Forum Technical
Committee is divided into a number of working groups: Physical, LES,
Signalling, B-ICI, Private NNI, Service Aspects and Applications,
Traffic Management, Testing, and Network Management. UNI 3.0 was
released in the fall. UNI 3.1 will be released this coming summer/fall.
o Physical (PHY)
- Existing standards: SONET STS-3c (155 Mbps) over multi-mode
and single-mode, DS3 (45 Mbps), 100 Mbps TAXI 4B5B, and 155
Mbps TAXI 8B10B
- New standards: DS1, SONET STS-3c over Cat-5 UTP, and SONET
STS-1 over Cat-3 UTP
- Future standards: SONET STS-12c (622 Mbps) over fiber/copper
o Traffic Management (TM)
ABR/VBR+. There are two proposals: rate-based FECN/BECN and
credit-based per VC link-by-link flow control. In September 1994,
a vote will be taken on which scheme, with completion in May 1995.
o Signalling
There are three scopes:
- UNI 3.1: alignment with ITU; corrections/typos; due in
summer/fall 1994
- P-NNI Phase 0/1: symmetric Q.2931 network side procedures
- UNI Phase 2 (UNI 4.0?): group addresses; anycast addresses;
leaf-initiated join; multipoint-to-multipoint; network layer
information
o Private NNI (P-NNI)
- Phase 0 (proposal at this time, will be revisited in May)
* simple symmetric signalling
* static routes
* Summer '94
- Phase 1
* link-state based (IS-IS/OSPF)
* progress on architecture/terms
* performance metrics TBD---May 1994 meeting
* will standardize generic call admission control algorithm
model for metrics
* hierarchical with arbitrary levels
* NSAPAs
* Complete November 1994 vote March 1995
o Service Aspects and Applications
- Committed to new SSCS on top of AAL5
- Video/Audio SSCS (VASSCS) based on IETF RTP
* time base recovery
* jitter removal
* bit error detection
* cell-loss detection
o Network Management
- M1 - private to private
- M2 - AToM MIB
- M3 - private to public
- M4 - public to public
- ILMI - clarifications in UNI 3.1, new version object
LAN Emulation - Keith McCloghrie
Keith's presentation slides follow these minutes. Note that the
presentation covered work in progress.
Conventional IP over ATM Draft Discussion - Masataka Ohta
o Non Goals
- No IP communication over WAN
- No LIS
- No Large single datalink layer (datalink layer is small in the
model)
o Physical Layer
- Physical layer can be divided into multiple datalink [regions?]
over the same datalink layer
- Some nodes act as bridges (no IP capability) and routers (with
IP capability)
- With small datalink layer, one can implement broadcast
o Routing Mechanism
- Connectionless packets router: cell switch connects to routing
manager
- Setting up direct transport connection request/grant protocol
- Direct transport connection, cells are forward directly
o Datalink layer connection
- Transport layer connection via direct datalink connections
- Performed by protocol done in ATM Forum
- Connections done via routers, routers forward cell by cell
o Comparison to LAN Emulation
- Just like IP over Ethernet
- Datalink layer broadcast
- Packet-wise forwarding (between datalinks only)
- No support network layer
- No cell-wise forwarding (ATM visible)
Multicast Issues - General Discussion
A discussion was held on the IP multicast to ATM multicast mapping
issue. There was much discussion on this issue. A design team has been
formed, lead by Bryan Lyles, to focus on this issue for the Toronto
meeting. A Bellcore patent on ATM multicast was issued on 1 March 1994.
We are looking into the patent in detail. Preliminary review indicates
there will not be any conflicts.
A design team will produce a report and possible framework.
Security Issues - General Discussion
o L3 information in call setup would help ATM Forum. IETF should be
responsible for the definition of this information.
o Need to prevent fraud in the IP<>ATM coupling only. Must
guarantee mappings.
o CERT is interested in call setup. Extension of information to
block.
Further discussion will take place on the mailing list to see where we
want/need to take this.
ATM UNI Signalling Support for IP over ATM - Maryann Perez
Maryann's presentation slides follow these minutes.
A sample setup message was presented.
There was much discussion on coding details. The strong consensus of
the working group was that the current document has the correct scope
and that it should be edited to clarify some issues, and to proceed as
quickly as possible towards turning it into an Informational RFC. Also,
the current document should be written as to not preclude further
follow-on work, e.g., such as tracking advances in ATM Forum
specifications (UNI 3.1) or other related work in this area.
The document will be revised as soon as possible and sent to the list
for discussion.
