  26. Description of Working Group:

  28. NOTE: This WG joined with the ROLC WG to form the ION Working Group
  29.  
  30. The IP Over Asynchronous Transfer Mode Working Group will focus on the
  31. issues involved in internetworking the IPv4 and IPv6 protocols over
  32. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks.  The goal for the working
  33. group is to produce standards for the TCP/IP Internet protocol suite.
  34.  
  35. The working group will develop models of IP over ATM internetworking
  36. architectures; e.g. the classical Logical IP Subnet (LIS) over ATM.
  37. The working group will develop protocols for encapsulation,
  38. multicasting, addressing, address resolution, neighbor discovery, use
  39. of published ATM Forum UNI signaling for IP call set up and connection
  40. negotiation, and network management, as appropriate, to allow the
  41. operation of internetwork protocols over an ATM network.  The working
  42. group will submit these protocols for standardization.
  43.  
  44. The working group will coordinate its activities with the following
  45. working groups:
  46.  
  47. 1) Routing over Large Cloud (rolc), for next hop address resolution
  48.    extensions to the classic LIS model,
  49.  
  50. 2) Integrated Services Working Group (intserv) for coordinating the
  51.    support of the enhanced Internet service model within an ATM LIS,
  52.  
  53. 3) IP Next Generation Working Group (ipngwg) for IPv6 over ATM
  54.    coordination, and
  55.  
  56. 4) Resource Reservation Setup Protocol (rsvp) for coordinating the
  57.    support IP signaling within an ATM LIS.
  58.  
  59. The working group will coordinate its work with other relevant
  60. standards bodies (e.g., ATM Forum, ANSI T1S1) and make recommendations
  61. to these organizations regarding the requirements for IP
  62. internetworking where the current published ATM standards, practices,
  63. or functionality do not meet the needs of internetworking.

  65. The working group will not develop physical layer standards for ATM.
