  15. The charter for the BOF was introduced:

  18.                       Host Resources MIB BOF
  19. The purpose of the BOF will be to explore interest in consolidating
  20. existing private vendor MIBs for SNMP that instrument computer hosts.
  21. Such instrumentation represents non-network specific information such
  22. as operational state and hardware and software configuration
  23. information.  This BOF will attempt to outline a plan for future
  24. activity in this area.
  25.  
  26. Because the internet comprises a wide variety of workstation types,
  27. discussion will not be confined to workstations that run Unix.
  28.  
  29. The goal of such an activity would be to improve interoperability in
  30. the Internet environment by consolidating the large number of SNMP SMI
  31. based objects have been and are being created by a number of vendors
  32. in this area.
  33.  
  34. Some attempt will be made to identify those areas of existing
  35. workstation instrumentation in which the desire for commonality is
  36. most urgently felt.

  39. In addition, the mailing list was announced: hostmib@andrew.cmu.edu.

  43. The group then began discussing the goals for this effort.  Several
  44. goals outlined in the charter were reiterated:
  45.  
  46. Goal #1: Improve interoperability by consolidating existing vendor MIBs.
  47. Goal #2: Any objects should be common across platforms (e.g. Unix, PC, Mac).
  48. Goal #3: Identify the most urgent areas and solve them quickly.
  49.  
  50. Goal #3, the desire for timeliness, was felt rather strongly by the group.
  51.  
  52. A discussion then ensued to attempt to identify the scope of this
  53. process.  It was noted that there are many problems to solve, some of
  54. which are very complex, and others which are more general in nature
  55. than instrumentation of hosts.
  56.  
  57. It was also unclear what comprises a host, but it was noted that
  58. focusing on "personal computers" or "workstations" was most important
  59. and makes it much easier to find commonality.

  61. It was proposed that the most important instrumentation would cover:
  62.     operational state/performance
  63.     Hardware configuration
  64.     Software configuration
  65.  
  66. Furthermore, the focus would be on the following parts of a "host":
  67. CPU, memory, disk, devices, and software (OS, drivers, applications).

  69. The group agreed that a model should be prepared to support this work.

  72. The group then began identifying resources for this work.  Many
  73. existing MIBs (and related specs) were identified including:
  74.     Character MIB
  75.     Unix MIB (Marshall Rose)
  76.     Unix MIB (UTK)
  77.     Unix MIB (U. of Colorado)
  78.     Apple System MIB
  79.     Unix MIB (HP)
  80.     Unix MIB (Dec)
  81.     Microcom LanLord
  82.     Racal Interlan
  83.     Unix MIB (Posix)
  84.     Netware 3rd party Lan inventory products

  86. In addition, in order to judge if there was sufficient interest in
  87. moving forward with this work, a show of hands was conducted as to who
  88. would participate in a Host Resource MIB Working Group, if formed.  A
  89. significant number of people (>30) indicated that they would
  90. participate.

  93. The group achieved consensus on the following plans for the future:

  95. Charter a working group (action item: Waldbusser)
  96. Define a Model
  97. Write a MIB

  100. In the remaining time, a straw proposal was outlined by Pete Grillo.
  101. This proposal defined a model and a MIB that instrumented common
  102. objects for "Desktop" hosts.

  104. At the end of this presentation, our time was up and the meeting was
  105. adjourned.
