  26. Description of Working Group:
  27.  
  28. 1. Recommend changes to the FTP protocol to support users of
  29.    languages other than English.
  30.  
  31. 2. Define a new command for a uniform directory listing between
  32.    platforms. This command will provide an alternative to the existing
  33.    LIST and NLST commands which has a common format between all FTP
  34.    implementations and which also provides the ability to represent
  35.    non-ASCII filenames.
  36.  
  37. 3. Make recommendations for standards-track protocol extensions to
  38.    support IPv6 in FTP. The group will evaluate RFC 1639 and recommend,
  39.    revise, or redo as appropriate.
  40.  
  41. 4. Define a mechanism for ftp clients and servers to transmit
  42.    information regarding extensions supported and not supported.
  43.    
  44. 5. Propose extensions, and/or review proposals submitted by others,
  45.    to improve the security of FTP.
  46.  
  47. 6. Define a standardized method of checkpoint/restart which works
  48.    for the stream transfer mode.
  49.  
  50. 7. Define a means of file transfer between a client and server
  51.    (as opposed to a client mediating a transfer between two servers)
  52.    which does not require the IP addresses of the endpoints to
  53.    be transmitted in the FTP protocol.
  54.  
  55. 8. Produce an informational document describing the SIZE and MDTM
  56.    commands as currently used.
  57.  
  58. The following issues are specifically omitted from the working group's
  59.  
  60. charter, but may be added by the Area Directors if time permits,
  61. once the above goals have been acheived.
  62.  
  63. 1. Compression of files for transmission.
  64.  
  65. 2. Internationalization of charset conversion for transmission.
