  9. * Status of various drafts
  10.  
  11.   - draft-ietf-dnsind-classless-inaddr-{00,01}.txt
  12.  
  13.     The -00 draft passed working group last call some time ago, and was
  14.     passed on to the IESG.  Comments received from the IESG and other
  15.     parties have been incorporated by the authors into a -01 draft which was
  16.     posted too late for ID for this meeting.
  17.  
  18.     No major changes.  People should be aware that nameservers which
  19.     delegate zones in this fashion should be authoritative for both the
  20.     parent and child zones, in order to reduce problems in old software with
  21.     CNAME records crossing zone boundaries.
  22.  
  23.   - draft-ietf-dnsind-2ndry-04.txt
  24.  
  25.     This draft relies on the Clarify draft, and will progress with it.
  26.  
  27.   - draft-ietf-dnsind-clarify-{07,08}.txt
  28.  
  29.     The -07 draft is available, and the -08 draft is nearly ready.  There
  30.     have been no recent requests for additions to this document.
  31.  
  32.     The major change in the upcoming -08 draft is clarification of what
  33.     should appear in the MNAME field of the SOA record: the name of the
  34.     master host.
  35.  
  36.     WG last call will be issued when 08 is published.
  37.  
  38.   - draft-ietf-dnsind-ncache-03.txt
  39.  
  40.     This draft is not yet ready.  See recent comments on the mailing list.

  42. * Interoperability
  43.  
  44.   The following documents are on the standards track, and the group intends
  45.   to move them to draft standard.
  46.  
  47.       RFC 1995 - IXFR (currently Proposed Standard)
  48.       RFC 1996 - Notify (currently Proposed Standard)
  49.       RFC 1982 - serial number arithmetic (currently Proposed Standard)
  50.       draft-ietf-dnsind-dynDNS-11.txt - dynamic update (about to be PS)
  51.  
  52.   In order for the documents to be advanced to Draft Standard, there must be
  53.   at least two interoperable, independently developed implementations. BIND
  54.   and an implementation for OS/2 are available (except that there's no IXFR
  55.   implementation for bind).
  56.  
  57.   In the case of serial number arithmetic, Randy Bush will attempt to locate
  58.   or perform a formal proof of correctness, and proposes to use that in lieu
  59.   of one of the implementations.  The IESG and poisson have not encouraged
  60.   this. 
  61.  
  62.   Stuart Kwan from Microsoft may be interested in sponsoring an
  63.   interoperability testing bake-off.
  64.  
  65.   Robert Elz has an implementation of sequence space arithmetic that works
  66.   with an arbitrary number of bits.  This could be tested against the 32-bit
  67.   implementations in various nameservers.
  68.  
  69.   It was decided that different people will organise and report on the
  70.   testing of different components.
  71.  
  72.     - Masataka Ohta will organise interoperability testing of IXFR;
  73.  
  74.     - Michael Patton and Olafur Gudmundsson will organise interoperability
  75.       testing of dynamic update and secure dynamic update;
  76.  
  77.     - Michael Patton will organise interoperability testing of Notify;
  78.  
  79.     - Robert Elz will organise interoperability testing of serial number
  80.       arithmetic.
  81.  
  82.   It was noted that there's no strict need to perform interoperability
  83.   testing of classless in-addr delegation, because that draft is intended to
  84.   become a BCP, not a Draft Standard.
  85.  
  86. * Status of DNSSEC drafts that affect DNSIND drafts
  87.  
  88.   The secure dynamic update draft (draft-ietf-dnssec-update-04.txt) has been
  89.   approved by the IESG and should go to Proposed Standard.  There will be at
  90.   least a six month delay before a PS can move to DS.  It is expected that
  91.   the non-secure dynamic update draft (draft-ietf-dnsind-dynDNS-11.txt) will
  92.   be able to move forward on the standards track together.
  93.  
  94. * Future of the dnsind working group
  95.  
  96.   I, N and D (IXFR, Notify, Dynamic update) are essentially completed.
  97.   There are some items, such as TSIG (draft-ietf-dnsind-tsig-01.txt) and the
  98.   Kitchen Sink RR (draft-eastlake-kitchen-sink-01.txt) that can conveniently
  99.   be handled by dnsind.  There are other issues, such as negative cacheing
  100.   and future evolution of the DNS, that might be better handled elsewhere.
  101.   It's not clear what the most appropriate course would be.
  102.  
  103.   The chair indicated that he was waiting for guidance from the IESG on what
  104.   should be done with the TSIG draft.  If guidance is not forthcoming within
  105.   a week or so, a WG last call will be issued.  The authors may make a quick
  106.   update first.
