  28. There is a clear need to provide and deploy a well managed 
  29. Directory Service for the Internet. A so-called White Pages Directory 
  30. Service providing people and organizational information, is especially 
  31. long overdue.  While the ultimate goal is a general Directory Service 
  32. for the Internet, this is too ambitious a goal to be tackled by a 
  33. single working group. Therefore ASID will keep a tight focus on access 
  34. and synchronization protocols for an Internet White Pages Directory 
  35. Service.
  36.  
  37. Other related working groups will be formed in the Applications Area  
  38. that will deal with other aspects of the Internet Directory Service.
  39.  
  40. Currently there are various protocols under development in the 
  41. Internet that aim to provide such a service: Internet X.500, WHOIS++, 
  42. NETFIND, CSO, RWHOIS, etc.  To allow these services to evolve to a 
  43. ubiquitous Internet Directory Service, a hybrid system that allows 
  44. interaction between the various different services is a requirement.
  45.   
  46. The ASID Working Group will define, evolve, and standardize protocols,
  47. algorithms and access methods for a White Pages Directory Service on 
  48. the Internet.
  49.  
  50. The following protocols (some still under development, some completed 
  51. by other IETF working groups) will be considered by the working group:
  52.  
  53.  - Lightweight Directory Acces Protocols (LDAP and Connectionless 
  54.    LDAP)
  55.  
  56.  - User Friendly Naming (UFN) and User Friendly Searching (UFS)
  57.  
  58.  - The SOLO directory access and searching system
  59.  
  60.  - The WHOIS++ directory service
  61.       
  62. The following work items are handled by other groups, and as such are
  63. outside the scope of this group. However their results are important 
  64. to the development of a White Pages Directory Service, and will be taken
  65. into account:
  66.         
  67.  - The Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
  68.  
  69.  - The UR* definitions
  70.  
  71.  - The NETFIND directory service
  72.          
  73. The group will focus on harmonizing, evolving and developing protocols
  74. and algorithms that deal with access to and synchronization of Directory 
  75. Service, both ad hoc and standards-based, with a goal of converging here 
  76. possible towards a hybrid system that ties together various forms of 
  77. Directory Service.  Clearly, protocol-level integration is only part of 
  78. the solution.  But to keep this group tightly focused, harmonizing 
  79. directory information and service models will be tackled by other 
  80. working groups.
