  8. DESCRIPTION:

  10. A common theme in many Internet data transfer protocols is an
  11. exchange of information which modifies the form and method of
  12. the data being transferred; in HTTP this is known as 'content
  13. negotiation' (since one is negotiating what will affect the
  14. content-* headers), but the capability exists or is needed in
  15. Internet Fax, printing, and other messaging standards.
  16.  
  17. Commonly these require protocol elments that describe the
  18. capabilities, characteristics and preferences of recipients;
  19. elements that describe the representation of entities and
  20. alternatives that a sender might send, and extensions
  21. that label additional characteristics of content that are not
  22. captured by the MIME content-type label.
  23.  
  24. This BOF will consider whether there is broad interest to 
  25. standardize a set of common attributes, to create an IANA 
  26. registry of them, and to consider a set of protocol scenarios 
  27. in which negotiation of such elements could take place.
