  10. Eight active working groups were held in the User Services Area (USV) 
  11. of the IETF in Los Angeles, California.

  16. Humanities and Arts WG (HARTS) session chaired by Scott Stoner and 
  17. Janet Max.
  18.  
  19. The HARTS WG opened their session with introductions of attendees. 
  20. Janet Max is the new working group co-chair along with Scott Stoner. 
  21. Susan Siegfried resigned due to a job change. 
  22.  
  23. This entire session specifically focused on developing the outline/draft 
  24. document, "Humanities and Arts: Sharing Center Stage on the 
  25. Internet". This group will continue to work the document via the 
  26. HARTS email list and have a completed draft in place by the Montreal 
  27. IETF in June.

  32. Internet School Networking (ISN) session chaired by Jennifer Sellers 
  33. and Jodi Ito. (Summary reported by Jodi Ito.)

  35. The ISN WG convened at 3:30pm by Jodi Ito, co-chair. There was one 
  36. addition to the agenda as listed at the beginning of the meeting - 
  37. discussion of Net Day '96. First order of business was to announce the 
  38. change in co-chairs. Jennifer Sellers has resigned and Sepi Boroumand 
  39. will be replacing her. Next, attendees introduced themselves to the 
  40. group and briefly explained their interest in ISN. The update to FYI 22 
  41. - FAQ for Schools has been completed. It was submitted as an I-D and 
  42. approved by the IESG to be published as an Informational RFC. Pat 
  43. Smith from Merit will lead the relocation of the ISN document 
  44. repository once it has been reviewed by ISN members. Several members 
  45. volunteered to review the site and the site will be mirrored at ISI once 
  46. it is moved. An FYI describing the repository will be written before the 
  47. Montreal IETF. A brief discussion suggested having an educational 
  48. organization assume on-going maintenance in the future.

  50. The directory of educational projects was killed due to a lack of 
  51. progress and the increase in web search tools which facilitate 
  52. searching for school projects on the Web. The ISN goals and milestones 
  53. will be updated to reflect these changes. The effort to publicize the FYI 
  54. series to the educational community was discussed. Suggestions included 
  55. approaching international organizations involving youths like Boy 
  56. Scouts and Girl Scouts, National Educators Assn. (www.nea.org), 
  57. Computer-Using Educators and distribution of informational sheets at 
  58. education conferences.

  60. The group expressed concerns regarding Net Day 96. Though Net Day 96 
  61. raises community awareness of the lack of technology infrastructure in 
  62. schools, if schools are wired with regard to key elements, the effort 
  63. will be wasted. A suggestion was made to include sample school 
  64. technology plans and wiring guidelines in the ISN document repository. 
  65. Last item to be discussed was the ISN support for INET 96 educational 
  66. activities including organization and support of an education booth at 
  67. INET 96 in Montreal. A question was raised regarding waiver of INET 
  68. fees for those assisting which will be brought to the attention of the 
  69. ISOC Education committee and workshop planning group. The meeting 
  70. concluded at approximately 4:35pm.

  75. Network Training Materials (TRAINMAT), chaired by Jill Foster, 
  76. Margaret Issacs, and Mark Prior. (Summary reported by Jill Foster.)

  78. The TRAINMAT Working Group has almost completed the work on the 
  79. Network Training Materials Catalogue. A small amount of verification 
  80. work is still to be done, which should be completed within the next 
  81. month. The final draft will then be submitted. Before closing down the 
  82. group, there was some discussion of current network training activities 
  83. including the use of the network to deliver training. As this involves 
  84. both the use of web-based tutorials and video-conferencing, there may 
  85. well be requirements, such as the registration of Powerpoint as a MIME 
  86. type (already in progress), that will need to be fed via USWG to other 
  87. working groups.

  92. Site Security Handbook WG (SSH), chaired by Barbara Fraser.

  95. The Site Security Handbook working group met twice during this IETF 
  96. meeting. The first meeting was focused on addressing any outstanding 
  97. issues concerning the Site Security Handbook draft. We expect to submit 
  98. a final draft by June 1. The group discussed the idea of submitting it for 
  99. a final call and decided it would be a good thing to do.

  101. The second meeting was spent working on the next document to be 
  102. produced by this working group, a site security guide for end users. We 
  103. developed an outline for this document and made writing assignments. 
  104. We expect a draft before the Montreal IETF meeting.

  109. User Glossary (USERGLOS) chaired by Gary Malkin. (Summary

  112. Another small but dedicated group reviewed the glossary Internet 
  113. Draft. Once the comments from this meeting and those previously sent 
  114. to the mailing list are incorporated, a new I-D will be published. This 
  115. should be done in early April. In early May, the document will be 
  116. submitted as a replacement for FYI 18.

  121. User Services Working Group (USWG) chaired by Joyce K. Reynolds.

  124. A report on IETF User Services Area activities was presented by Joyce 
  125. Reynolds, which included USV Area Working Group Status and related 
  126. USV Area I-Ds. A pointer was provided on a Spanish translation of the 
  127. "Internet Users' Glossary".

  129. Tom Newell (InterNIC Liaison) presented an update on the USV-Web 
  130. page, and an update on new InterNIC projects. Jill Foster (University of 
  131. Newcastle) presented a report on related global liaison group activities 
  132. of TERENA's Information Services and User Support (ISUS) group.

  134. Discussion/Participation of USWG projects were next on the agenda. A 
  135. brief discussion was held in regards to the future vision of the USV 
  136. Area in the IETF for the next two years, and potential candidates for 
  137. the USV Area Director position in 1998. USWG project focus was placed 
  138. on updates to FYI 7 "FYI on Questions and Answers: Answers to 
  139. Commonly Asked "Experienced Internet User" Questions", (Also RFC 
  140. 1207), February 1991, and FYI 4 "FYI on Questions and Answers: Answers 
  141. to Commonly asked "New Internet User" Questions", (Also RFC 1594), 
  142. March 1994.
