  6. The AFIC BOF, chaired by Mark Laubach and Jim Grace, met on Tuesday,
  7. 18 July.  There were 67 attendees.
  8.  
  9. Jim Grace presented the charter for the ATM Forum and an overview of the
  10. aspects of the ATM Forum's technical work.  A question was raised
  11. regarding what is the difference between the local ATM switch and the
  12. private ATM switch?  Jim replied that there are no real differences in
  13. the ATM Forum's work.  Joel Halpern added that there may be differences
  14. between some vendors and what they provide.

  41. Jim gave an overview of the following activities and the opportunities

  45.    o Private Network-to-Network Interface (PNNI)

  47.      -  Variable hierarchy for UNI 3.0 Private ATM addresses

  49.      -  ANYCAST addresses supported

  51.      -  Signaling based on UNI 3.1 Q.2931 protocol

  53.      -  Interim Inter-switch Signaling Protocol (IISP) based on static
  54.         routing

  56.      -  Phase 1 specification aiming for a unified protocol supporting
  57.         inter-domain and intra-domain application

  59.      -  Schedule:  IISP specification in the first quarter of 1995,
  60.         Phase 1 specification in late 1995

  63. A question was raised regarding addressing formats:  do they all look
  64. like DCC, ???, and E.164 embedded?  Is it an issue to add another format
  65. at sometime in the future?  Joel Halpern replied that it is no problem
  66. for PNNI to support an additional format, it is purely a bitstring
  67. issue.

  70.    o Multiprotocol over ATM (MPOA)

  72.      -  The fundamental purpose of the MPOA service is to provide
  73.         end-to-end internetworking layer connectivity across an ATM
  74.         fabric, including the case where some internetworking layer
  75.         hosts are attached directly to the ATM fabric and some are
  76.         attached to legacy subnetwork technologies.

  78.      -  Work related to the Routing Over Large Clouds Working Group
  79.         (ROLC) of the the IETF.

  83. Mechanisms for Increasing Cooperation

  86. Several mechanisms will be presented for increasing cooperation with the
  87. IETF. By charter, the ATM Forum has been a closed industrial consortium
  88. with specific bylaws, dues, etc.  The Forum has recognized a need to
  89. make certain internal documents available to the IETF:

  110. The BOF was then opened up for general discussion, questions, and

  117.   Q:         What is the status on opening up the Forum?
  118.   Jim:       There is debate within the Forum, even with doing away with
  119.              the auditing membership.
  120.  
  121.   Q:         Can the IETF suggest that the ATM Forum do away with the auditing
  122.              membership and open things up?
  123.   Jim:       It's an issue we can communicate back.
  124.              Also, info@atmforum.com works for getting information, including
  125.              for principle members to get FTP access.

  127.   Q:         Can the IETF join as a principle member?
  128.   Jim:       I don't know.
  129.   Frank:     You've told us about how ATM Forum members can do better things
  130.              with the Forum.  What is this BOF about?
  131.   Mark:      To open up a few specific documents to the IETF and to allow
  132.              discussions to happen about these documents.
  133.   Joel:      We need more feedback from this group passed to the Forum in order
  134.              to broaden its opening up.
  135.   Brian:     It sounds like this is a money issue -- the Forum ought to open
  136.              up all of its drafts to the public for feedback -- the IETF is just
  137.              a subset of the public.

  139.   Q:         But opening up the documents doesn't open up the voting privileges
  140.              and the voting counts.
  141.   Joel:      The information exchange will make a difference.

  143.   Mark:      How do the responsibilities of effort divide between the IETF
  144.              and ATM Forum for internetworking over ATM?
  145.   Brian:     Yes, will the ATM Forum take the IP over ATM Framework document as
  146.              seriously as we're being asked to take the MPOA document?
  147.   Joel:      ROLC NHRP work is being taken very seriously.
  148.   Ross:      MPOA is at a very early stage and this is a good time for feedback.
  149.   Jim:       I will take what I've heard here back to the ATM Forum

  151.   Frank:     What is the IETF going to get out of this effort?
  152.   Anon:      Companies who are not in the ATM Forum get a way to influence
  153.              the Forum.

  155.   Q:         What about the differences between MPOA with RFC 1577 and MARS?
  156.              Where will control reside if we decide to merge them?
  157.   Joel:      Good questions.  There's a lot to do here.
  158.   Ross:      Would it be that we go back and forth and bless identical work or
  159.              do we give control to one group?
