  6. Minutes of the NM Area Directorate BOF (NMAREA)

  8. The area director announced that an open meeting for the Network
  9. Management Area would be a regular event at each meeting of the IETF.
  10. These meetings will consist of an area status report and
  11. presentations/discussion on a specific topic of interest to the
  12. community.
  13.  
  14. The area status report is attached.  However, two items require specific
  15. exposition:
  16.  
  17.  
  18.   1. Due to a lack of senior technical resources in the Network
  19.      Management Area, the area director is imposing a moratorium on new
  20.      working groups for the remainder of calendar year 1993.  At the
  21.      beginning of next year, the area director will evaluate whether the
  22.      resources exist to allow the formation of new working groups.
  23.      Although there is much interest in the Network Management Area, the
  24.      number of volunteers with senior experience in SNMP philosophy and
  25.      design is quite limited.  Many of these volunteers are overloaded
  26.      in terms of working group chair or working group consultant
  27.      positions.  As such, the area director is unable to allocate
  28.      resources for new working groups---indeed, some existing working
  29.      groups are suffering as a result.

  31.   2. E-mail to the area director should be addressed as
  32.      mrose.iesg@dbc.mtview.ca.us in order to distinguish between the
  33.      non-area director and area director roles held by the area
  34.      director.  In other words, people wanting to talk to the area
  35.      director should send e-mail to mrose.iesg; people wanting to talk
  36.      to Marshall Rose (Theorist, Implementor, and Agent Provacateur)
  37.      should send mail to mrose.

  40. Area Status Report

  42. The topic for this open meeting of the Network Management Area was
  43. ``SNMPv2 implementation and deployment issues.''
  44.  
  45. Keith McCloghrie made a presentation on his Internet-Draft ``Algorithms
  46. for Automating Administration in SNMPv2 Managers,'' which reports on one
  47. possible implementation strategy.
  48.  
  49. Steve Waldbusser discussed the current work on the SNMP implementation:
  50. an implementation strategy for an ultra-fast MIB compiler, and a
  51. TCL-based API for SNMP management applications.  He also asked if there
  52. would be interest in a CMU-hosted SNMPv2 interoperability testing event
  53.

  60. during either September or October.  Some interest was expressed.
  61.  
  62. Jeff Case reported on SNMPv2 and RMON demonstrations at ISINM 1993, held
  63. in April.  Seven vendors demonstrated interoperability of a variety of
  64. SNMPv2 features including manager-to-manager.  Of particular interest
  65. was the performance boost when using get-bulk.  He also discussed
  66. implementation experience with the automatic clock synchronization
  67. facilities for multi-threaded management applications.

  69. Dave Perkins reported informal research experience with SNMPv2 with
  70. respect to size and performance.

  72. Finally, there was general discussion on get-bulk performance and
  73. caching strategy.

  75. The area director concluded the meeting by asking the attendees to be
  76. ever mindful of SNMPv2 implementation and deployment experiences so that
  77. they can contribute to the SNMPv2 evaluation process.
