  8. Minutes of the FTP-FTAM Gateway BOF (FTPFTAM)
  9.  
  10. The purpose of the BOF was to discuss the status of the Internet Draft
  11. FTP-FTAM Gateway Specification and the usefulness of transitioning the
  12. document to a more permanent status.  Mr.  Mindel initiated the
  13. discussion with an overview of the document's purpose, evolution, and
  14. content.
  15.  
  16. The purpose of the document is to provide a formal specification for a
  17. gateway that maps, in real-time, between the FTP and FTAM protocols.
  18. The specification will be of use to both implementors and customers.  As
  19. an IETF-endorsed standard, the specification will permit implementors to
  20. justify the cost of building FTP-FTAM gateways.  Robert Cooney,
  21. representing both the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) and the
  22. Navy Open Systems Environment Testbed, expressed the dilemma currently
  23. faced by customers that need to procure FTP-FTAM gateways - there is no
  24. specification available to reference.  In the electronic mail world
  25. there is Request for Comments 1148 (RFC1148), Mapping between X.400 and
  26. RFC 822, to serve as a reference for electronic mail gateways.

  28. The FTP-FTAM Gateway specification is based on the original NIST
  29. FTP-FTAM Gateway design, published by M.A. Wallace et al in 1986, as
  30. well as on lessons learned by the authors in fielding the ISODE FTP-FTAM
  31. Gateway on the MILNET in 1989.  The following relevant historical events
  32. were also noted:

  35.    o MITRE implemented FTP-FTAM Gateway based on NIST design (1987)
  36.    o MITRE implementation was incorporated into ISODE
  37.    o FTP-FTAM Gateway (ISODE 6.0) was fielded on MILNET under the DoD
  38.      GOSIP Gateway Initiative (1989)

  41. The FTP-FTAM Gateway specification contributes to the advancement of the
  42. FTP-FTAM Gateway concept in the following ways:

  45.    o Clarifies and enhances the FTP and FTAM mappings documented by
  46.      NIST.
  47.  
  48.    o Enhances the user interaction capability provided by the ISODE
  49.      implementation of the FTP-FTAM Gateway.
  50.  
  51.    o Provides guidelines for fielding FTP-FTAM Gateways on the
  52.      Internet(s10hs12V).
  53.  
  54.    o Serves as a formal specification for the FTP-FTAM Gateway suitable
  55.      for implementors to use in building additional FTP-FTAM Gateways.

  63.    o Serves as a formal specification for organizations desiring to
  64.      procure FTP-FTAM Gateways.

  67. The Internet Draft was reviewed by the IETF in July 1991.  In addition,
  68. Digital Equipment Corporation has developed an FTP-FTAM Gateway using
  69. the draft specification.  Based on this implementation, DEC provided
  70. valuable input to the specification.

  72. All BOF attendees agreed that the document is mature, represents stable
  73. technology, and has undergone sufficient peer review.  The discussion
  74. then turned to the IETF status of the specification.  In time, the
  75. usefulness of the specification will be proven by the number and quality
  76. of implementations based on it.  Daniel Fauvarque, of Sun-France,
  77. indicated that his organization may have an interest in implementing an
  78. FTP-FTAM Gateway, but at this time, there is no published standard.  He
  79. indicated that advancement of the specification to Proposed Standard
  80. would provide sufficient status to permit Sun to use the specification
  81. at the appropriate time.

  83. Dave Piscitello, the OSI Area Director in attendance, agreed to advance
  84. the specification by submitting a request to the IESG to consider the
  85. Internet-Draft FTP-FTAM Gateway Specification as a Proposed Standard.

  87. Copies of the FTP-FTAM Gateway specification were distributed at the
  88. BOF.
