Santa Clara Valley Light Rail:
The Santa Clara Valley Light Rail ("trolley") system runs directly
behind the back side of the Fairmont Hotel and has a stop there.
This trolley system is actually quite nice and convenient to use.
The trolley systems' "Tamien" stop inter-connects with Cal-Train,
which is described below.
Unfortunately, the trolley doesn't yet go all over the place.
There is a trolley stop near the San Jose Airport, but it is not
walking distance and I am not accurately informed whether a shuttle
service exists between the airport and the trolley stop.
The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority ("TA") has a web site
with many more details that is located at:
http://www.transit.santa-clara.ca.us/ta
CAL-TRAIN:
It is practical to take Cal-Train commuter passenger trains from
anywhere in the "San Francisco to Gilroy" corridor and then connect
with the Santa Clara Light Rail at the "Tamien" Cal-Train station to
get to/from the Fairmont Hotel. Bicycles are permitted on the
northernmost car of the Cal-Train. Cal-Train is heavily used by
commuters, so during normal work commute times, the train can be
quite full with people and bicycles. It takes about 75 minutes to
get from downtown San Francisco to the Light-Rail interconnection via
Cal-Train. One can purchase a ticket from the conductors once onboard
the Cal-Train if the station being used is not staffed.
The San Franciso terminus of Cal-Train has good connections with the
San Francisco City bus system. During commuting hours, it can actually
be faster to take Cal-Train from the San Jose/Santa Clara area to
San Francisco than it would take to drive an automobile. Route 101
can get quite badly congested during commuting hours.
There is a free shuttle van from the San Francisco Airport (SFO)
to the Cal-Train station at "Millbrae". It is practical to travel
from the SFO to the Fairmont Hotel via this free shuttle, then Cal-Train,
and then Light Rail as long as one has normal amounts of baggage.
Cal-Train does not run all night, so people planning to use this airport
connection should check their airport times against Cal-Train times on
the Cal-Train web site (see below).
There is a Cal-Train stop at Castro Street in Mountain View. The
Castro Street area has a number of good restaurants and two coffee
houses and can be a pleasant place for dinner. There is also a
Cal-Train stop near downtown Palo Alto, which is another alternative
for a dinner outing. However, it would probably be faster to drive
to either of these destinations than take Light Rail then Cal-Train.
There is a Cal-Train web site with more information, located at:
http://server.berkeley.edu/Transit/Carriers/CalTrain/
