  24. The National Science Foundation Network Service Center (NNSC) operates
  25. the Info-Server for the purpose of providing important Internet
  26. documents by email. 
  27.  
  28.   *  HELP:  There is now one general 'help' document for the whole
  29.      Info-Server, which is the file you are now reading. It contains
  30.      over-all information about 'Request:' categories, and samples of
  31.      the most important or recent 'topic:' files under each 'Request:'.
  32.  
  33. To order this document, Send a message to info-server@nnsc.nsf.net.
  34. The Subject field does not matter and may be omitted. Place the
  35. following text in the body of the message:

  197.            3.  CURRENT STATUS OF THE INFO-SERVER

  200. NNSC, the NSF Network Service Center, and CSNET, the Computer+Science
  201. Network, shared the operation of the Info-Server on the host sh.cs.net
  202. until CSNET ceased operations on September 25, 1991.  At that time,
  203. the Info-Server was taken over by the NNSC and moved to the host
  204. nnsc@nnsc.nsf.net.  The NNSC Info-Server continues to supply on-line
  205. services to the Internet community and to other networks that have
  206. email access to the Internet.
  207.  
  208. The NNSC Info-Server continues to distribute Info-Server documents for
  209. request categories NSFNET, CALENDAR, and RESOURCE-GUIDE.  In addition,
  210. we have added the former CSNET request categories INFO and RFC, and
  211. the new categories IESG, IETF, INTERNET-DRAFTS, INTERNET-TOUR, ISOC,
  212. and PHONEBOOK.

  214. We have had to suspend temporarily the popular request category
  215. MOD-SOURCES (comp.sources.unix), but we hope to be able restore it in
  216. the near future.
  217.  
  218. The NNSC staff is reviewing and modifying the NNSC Info-Server
  219. offerings.  Further changes will be announced in this HELP document.
  220. If you have questions or suggestions, send them to

  252. The NNSC Info-Server is an automatic program that delivers information
  253. by electronic mail.  To order a document from the Info-Server, send a
  254. message to 'INFO-SERVER@nnsc.nsf.net'. You do not need a subject field. The 
  255. text of your message must be in a special format, such as:
  256.  
  257.      REQUEST: INFO
  258.       TOPIC: HELP
  259.       TOPIC: INDEX
  260.      REQUEST: END
  261.  
  262. This request asks for two documents 'HELP' (this document) and 'INDEX'
  263. from the collection 'INFO'. Your message must have a 'REQUEST:' line,
  264. and one or more 'TOPIC:' lines to specify one or more documents.  As
  265. noted above, you should not put more than twenty (20) 'TOPIC:' in any
  266. one request message.  'REQUEST:' and 'TOPIC:' must be on a separate
  267. lines.  The line 'REQUEST:  END' is optional; it tells the Info-server
  268. to ignore the rest of the message.
  269.  
  270. To send documents to an address that is different from the address in
  271. your From: field, include a Reply-to: field in the header of your
  272. message.  Do NOT include a Reply-to: or Acknowledge-to: field in the
  273. body of the message -- the Info-Server won't recognize them.
  274.  
  275. For each request message, the Info-Server generates a receipt message
  276. which includes the list of documents sent, a report of errors in the
  277. request, and, if a Reply-to: field is used, the address in the From: 
  278. field of the request message.  (The Info-Server does not generate
  279. receipt messages for request messages with more than twenty (20)
  280. 'TOPIC:' lines.)
  281.  
  282. You may combine different requests in the same message, and use any
  283. combination of upper- and lower-case letters in your text.  You may
  284. also include or omit spaces and tabs, use any number of 'REQUEST:'
  285. lines, place any number of 'TOPIC:' lines under each 'REQUEST:', and
  286. omit 'REQUEST: END'.

  304.               5.  IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH LARGE MESSAGES
  305. ******************************************************************************

  307. The NNSC Info-Server is now configured to split documents into a 
  308. maximum size of 40000 bytes (40K bytes).  The reason is that some
  309. important mail gateways reject messages longer than an arbitrary limit,
  310. and others have difficulty with long messages from time to time.
  311.  
  312. You may specify a limit, in lines or bytes, to the maximum size of
  313. document that you wish to have sent in a single message.  For example:
  314.  
  315.      LINE-LIMIT: 1000         or          BYTE-LIMIT: 25K
  316.  
  317. The Info-Server will break the documents at exactly the specified
  318. number of lines, or at the line preceding the specified number of
  319. bytes.  The minimum limit is 250 lines or 19000 bytes.  You may use
  320. the form '25000' or '25K' in either limit, but NOT '5,000'.  The limit
  321. affects only lines up to the next REQUEST: line.
  322.  
  323. To allow for added header lines, you should set your limit at least 5K
  324. lower than the limit set by your gateway.

  328.             6.  ANONYMOUS FTP FOR INTERNET AND DIAL-UP IP USERS

  331. You may use the file transfer protocol, 'ftp', to retrieve documents
  332. from NNSC.NSF.NET.  Log in as 'anonymous' with password 'guest'.
  333.  
  334. Info documents are individual files in the directory 'info'.  For
  335. example, a copy of 'interest-groups-announcement' has the pathname
  336. 'info/interest-groups-announcement'.  To see what is in the top-level
  337. directory, use the 'ls' or 'dir' commands.  'ls' shows filenames only;
  338. 'dir' is the equivelent of the command 'ls -ls'; it shows a more
  339. verbose display, and puts the filenames in alphabetical order.

  365. But note that when you transfer a file from a lower-level directory
  366. nnsc.nsf.net (the remote host) to your local host, you cannot use the
  367. pathname 'info/interest-groups-announcement'; instead, you must use two
  368. commands, 'cd' (change directory) and 'get'.

  378. A single topic may be split up into multiple files, in which case the
  379. document name may be a directory, and the individual files in the

  383. lower case, just as they appear in the 'ls' or 'dir' listing.
