  26. Egad, an update! After a couple of years of moldering, I'm blowing the dust
  27. off the list and beginning to maintain it again. Please bear with me as I
  28. ramp back up to speed -- if you suggested an acronym months or years ago and
  29. it's not in the list, it may have fallen through the cracks, so don't be
  30. afraid to resubmit it.

  32. The canonical version of this list will now be the HTML form, available at
  33. http://www.joss.ucar.edu/~mark/list.html . From that, I will generate the
  34. text form for USENET posting.

  36. This list is offered as a reference for translating commonly appearing
  37. acronyms in the space-related newsgroups. If I forgot or botched your
  38. favorite acronym, please let me know! Also, if there's an acronym not on
  39. this list that confuses you, drop me a line, and if I can figure it out,
  40. I'll add it to the list.

  42. Note that this is intended to be a reference for frequently seen acronyms,
  43. and is most emphatically not encyclopedic. If I incorporated every acronym I
  44. ever saw, I'd soon run out of disk space. :-)

  46. The list will be posted at regular intervals, every 30 days. All comments
  47. regarding it are welcome; I'm reachable as mark@ucar.edu.

  49. Note that this just tells what the acronyms stand for -- you're on your own
  50. for figuring out what they mean. Note also that the total number of acronyms
  51. in use far exceeds what I can list; special-purpose acronyms that are
  52. essentially always explained as they're introduced are omitted. Further,
  53. some acronyms stand for more than one thing; as of Edition 3 of the list,
  54. these acronyms appear on multiple lines, unless they're simply different
  55. ways of referring to the same thing.

  57. Thanks to everybody who's sent suggestions since the first version of the
  58. list, and especially to Daniel Fischer (p515dfi@mpifr-bonn.mpg.de), who is
  59. maintaining a truly huge list (over 800 at last count) of acronyms and
  60. terms, mostly in German (which I read, fortunately), and Ken Hollis at NASA,
  61. who has sent me copies of NASA's own tomes of TLAs.

  63. PS: Strictly speaking, most of these are "abbreviations" rather than
  64. "acronyms"; pedantically, it's only an "acronym" if you make a word out of
  65. it, a la "laser." In practice, though, everybody calls 'em acronyms.
