  53.   Simplistic definition: Computer applications in medical care
  54.   Complicated definition:
  55.      Biomedical Informatics is an emerging discipline that has been defined 
  56.      as the study, invention, and implementation of structures and 
  57.      algorithms to improve communication, understanding and management of 
  58.      medical information.  The end objective of biomedical informatics is 
  59.      the coalescing of data, knowledge, and the tools necessary to apply 
  60.      that data and knowledge in the decision-making process, at the time 
  61.      and place that a decision needs to be made.  The focus on the 
  62.      structures and algorithms necessary to manipulate the information 
  63.      separates Biomedical Informatics from other medical disciplines where 
  64.      information content is the focus.

  126. 5) What do people trained in Medical Informatics do?

  128.   Many people who train in medical informatics have professional degrees in
  129.   a health related area.  Nurses, physicians, medical librarians, and computer
  130.   scientists will each find their professional niche in a different area:
  131.   Consultants with management consulting firms, hospital record managers, data
  132.   analysts, librarians, senior staff in state health departments, programmer/
  133.   analysts in industry, and just good old family doctors.

  135.   Different educational programs have varying expectations for their students
  136.   future careers.  It is best to contact each program to explore the range
  137.   of career opportunities their graduates are prepared for.

  161. 7) What is HL7?
  162.  
  163.   HL7 (Health Level 7) is a specification for electronic data exchange
  164.   between health care institutions, particularly hospitals, and between
  165.   different computer systems within hospitals.  It defines standard
  166.   message types (for example, admit a patient, report a lab result) with
  167.   required and optional data for each.  Messages are defined to be
  168.   independent of computer system and communications protocol, and they
  169.   are constructed so that later versions of the HL7 standard can add
  170.   data elements without "breaking" systems using older versions of HL7.
  171.  
  172.   HL7 began as a bottom-up movement by system vendors and hospitals to
  173.   replace custom-built system interfaces with a shared standard.  It has
  174.   become the de facto standard for hospital system interfaces in the
  175.   United States.  Other standards in the field include ASC X12N, widely
  176.   used for insurance payment and remittance messages; and the ACR/NEMA
  177.   DICOM standards for radiology images.
