  33. Certain topics come up again and again on the Rialto. They are good
  34. questions, but each time they recur much net bandwidth and reader time
  35. is spent on repetitive responses and corrections to incorrect or
  36. incomplete answers.

  38. This article, which is posted in several parts on a regular basis,
  39. attempts to cover these common topics definitively and succinctly, so
  40. that discussion doesn't get bogged down in the repetition. The
  41. complete Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) list is available in several
  42. formats. The most current version is always the one available at
  43. http://www.unc.edu/~sherman/sca-faq.htm. An archive of the most recent
  44. posted version is available via FTP from rtfm.mit.edu in directory
  45. /pub/usenet/rec.org.sca. Those without FTP access should send e-mail
  46. to mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu with "send
  47. usenet/news.answers/finding-sources" in the body of the message to
  48. find out how to do FTP by e-mail.

  110. 1.1 What is the Rialto? What's it for?

  112. The Rialto consists of a Usenet newsgroup, (rec.org.sca) which is
  113. propagated to thousands of machines world-wide, and an electronic mail
  114. digest (the SCA Digest), which is produced on a badly overworked
  115. machine at MIT, and mailed directly to hundreds of people, also
  116. world-wide. We are also connected to Fidonet and other BBS networks.

  118. The Rialto exists to discuss topics of interest to the Society for
  119. Creative Anachronism. The SCA is a non-profit, educational
  120. organization of people that study the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and
  121. recreate those parts we find most interesting.

  123. 1.2 Why is it called the Rialto?

  125. The Rialto is named for a marketplace in Venice in the vicinity of the
  126. Rialto bridge. As people gathered there to gossip and exchange ideas,
  127. so do we gather here.

  129. 1.3 How do I post to the Rialto?

  131. Check with your local system administrator or sysop for instructions
  132. for your exact machine and software. Generally, you either post a
  133. message to the newsgroup rec.org.sca, or send mail to
  134. sca@mc.lcs.mit.edu. See elsewhere in this FAQ for guidelines to
  135. posting style.

  137. 1.4 What is the SCA Digest? How do I get on/off it?

  139. The SCA Digest is the electronic mail version of the Rialto. One can
  140. subscribe and unsubscribe by sending email to
  141. SCA-Request@mc.lcs.mit.edu, requesting your addition to or deletion
  142. from the list. Expect this to take up to a week - the people running
  143. the Digest are volunteers with other work to do. If you read
  144. rec.org.sca, there is no need for you to subscribe to SCA-Request, as
  145. messages are gatewayed in both directions.

  147. 1.5 Where can I get back issues of the Digest?

  149. You may ask for back issues of any digests by writing to
  150. SCA-Request@mc.lcs.mit.edu and specifying the date(s)/number(s) of the
  151. issue you want mailed to you. That address is serviced by overworked
  152. humans so expect any request to take up to a week to process. Please
  153. be reasonable about the number of back issues you request.

  161. 1.6 Why do I see the answers before the questions?

  163. The short answer is that messages propagate from one system to another
  164. at varying speeds, and therefore an answer posted on a well-connected
  165. machine may arrive at a less-well-connected machine before the
  166. question does. The longer answer requires paying attention to the fact
  167. that the Rialto is both a Usenet newsgroup and a mailing list, and the
  168. gateway between them is another place where the ordering of messages
  169. can be scrambled. There is nothing that can easily (read
  170. cost-effectively) be done about the scrambling of message order (it
  171. would require a complete redesign of the Usenet newsgroups, just to
  172. start with) so please don't ask. This message scrambling, by the way,
  173. is a good reason to paraphrase or quote just enough of the message you
  174. are answering to make clear what you are talking about.

  176. 1.7 Am I allowed to publish Rialto postings in our
  177. newsletter? 
  178.  
  179. The legalities of copyright ownership in an electronic medium are
  180. currently murky. In countries that are signatories to the Berne
  181. Convention (which includes the USA and Canada), text is copyrighted
  182. from the moment of creation. However, text submitted to newsgroups and
  183. digests _may_ be different, as it is intended for a wide distribution.
  184. There is no clear answer in the USA at the present time. The polite
  185. thing to do, regardless of whether a lawyer would tell you it is
  186. necessary, is contact the author(s) of the article(s) in question, and
  187. ask for permission to publish. Abide by their wishes. Assuming
  188. permission is given, you (or your chronicler) probably want to save a
  189. hardcopy of the message giving you permission.
