  171. the question itself, as given in the Table of Contents above.  In many
  172. newsreaders, including rn, trn, and strn, you can jump from one
  173. question to the next by hitting CONTROL-G.  You can also look for a

  222. Subject: <0.3> Goal of this FAQ
  223.  
  224. This FAQ is intended to cover many of the basic questions about hedgehogs.
  225. Primarily, it deals with pet (African Pigmy) hedgehogs, in particular as 
  226. pets, but also contains information about wild hedgehogs (in particular, 
  227. European hedgehogs).  I hope to extend the coverage of the FAQ to address 
  228. both groups reasonably, and since there is considerable crossover in how the
  229. information applies, much of what is said about one group is applicable to 
  230. the other, with a little common sense used in the interpretation.  
  231.  
  232. The number of books and other sources for information is finally getting to 
  233. be reasonable, however, there is still relatively little information 
  234. available on caring for and understanding hedgehogs, at least compared to 
  235. most animals.  While this FAQ does not intend to be an in-depth 
  236. dissertation on hedgehogs, it is expected to provide some basic information.
  237. I should also point out that I expect to keep the comments fairly light, so 
  238. as not to make the bulk of this FAQ qualify as a cure for insomnia.  If you
  239. start to find it boring, tell me -- I probably fell asleep while typing that
  240. section, and messed up on the what I was saying.

  242. I do have to admit to one pang of guilt.  When I discovered there was so 
  243. very little information on looking after hedgehogs, I desperately wanted 
  244. a FAQ to refer to.  Since there wasn't one (Sorry Nathan, I didn't even 
  245. know about your efforts then) I figured the best way to get all the 
  246. information I wanted was to write the FAQ, and hope the comments it managed 
  247. to get would provide all the missing bits and pieces.  'Nuff said, let's 
  248. get on with hedgehogs.

  254. I can take credit for little of the contents of this FAQ, virtually
  255. every bit of useful information deserves thanks to others.  I have tried
  256. to give credit to the right person in the right place by indenting 
  257. specific comments by others and citing the authors.  My sole real 
  258. contribution has been to cobble together the many useful pieces of 
  259. information on hedgehogs that have appeared on the Internet into a
  260. single source.

  262. Of all the contributors, I would like to extend a special thanks to
  263. Nathan Tenny whose unofficial hedgehog FAQ formed the basis for the 
  264. information below.  Nathan deserves the lion's share of the inspiration 
  265. on this FAQ, and should be considered the father of the hedgehog FAQ.

  267. hedgehog anecdotes, instead of good information.

  468.   It is now apparent that the N.A.H.A. (North American Hedgehog Association)
  469.   is defunct, and it does not appear likely to return to operation within
  470.   the foreseeable future.  As a result, I have removed most of the direct 
  471.   references to it from the FAQ, to avoid any further problems with people
  472.   attempting to contact or join them and getting no response, or worse, 
  473.   losing money for membership that they may have sent in.  This has resulted
  474.   in small revisions throughout the FAQ, which I will not bother listing
  475.   individually.
