  64.    Prior to the summer of 1991, there was a single newsgroup for
  65.    discussing issues of interest to pet owners. This was rec.pets, and
  66.    this group still exists for those pets that don't have their own
  67.    newsgroups.
  68.    
  69.    Rec.pets.dogs (and rec.pets.cats) was formed in the summer of 1991.
  70.    Joe DiBenedetto proposed the split and collected the votes, which
  71.    proved more than enough for its official creation.
  72.    
  73.    In the late summer of 1994, another discussion on splitting
  74.    rec.pets.dogs itself started up, due to the hundreds of daily messages
  75.    on the group. This split was proposed by Cindy Tittle Moore, and
  76.    Ronald Dippold collected the overwhelmingly positive vote. The new
  77.    splinter groups were created on November 9th, and rec.pets.dogs
  78.    removed two months later.

  80.   Original Charter for RPD
  81.   
  82.    Rec.pets.dogs is a newsgroup devoted to domestic canine issues. This
  83.    group can be friendly and helpful. Flamewars are generally limited to
  84.    several topics: crating dogs, training by the Koheler method, docking
  85.    and cropping, animal rights activism, wolf hybrids and pit-bull (or
  86.    other breed) dog bans. New readers are advised against starting these
  87.    topics up on the newsgroup as long, protracted, and inflammatory
  88.    discussions often ensue. The facts pertaining to these controversial
  89.    topics are covered in the FAQ's. This is not to say that these topics
  90.    are forbidden from discussion on rec.pets.dogs, but that regular
  91.    readers would greatly appreciate it if you checked out what the FAQ
  92.    had to say on them to make sure you have something new to contribute.

  130.           training for the particular activity, physical conditioning,
  131.           how to hook up with activities available in your area, etc.
  132.           Sportsmanlike conduct is expected; in particular, derogatory
  133.           comments about activities you don't care for are frowned upon.
  134.           Use of keywords in the subject line to clearly identify your
  135.           activity is encouraged.

  138.           This group is for the discussion of typical behavioral problems
  139.           with dogs. Examples include but are not limited to: digging,
  140.           barking, aggressive behavior, housetraining, crate training,
  141.           etc. Also appropriate is discussion of "why" dogs behave as
  142.           they do and how to work with that to eliminate some behaviors
  143.           and reinforce others.

  146.           This group is for extensive breed specific discussion. Topics
  147.           may include breed specific health problems, locating breeders
  148.           of particular breeds, discussing breed specific abilities and
  149.           characteristics, asking about what breeds make appropriate pets
  150.           under what circumstances. Clearly identifying the breed you are
  151.           discussing in the subject line is encouraged.

  154.           This group is for health and medical questions related to dogs.
  155.           This includes, but certainly is not limited to, questions on
  156.           hip dysplasia, epilepsy, eye problems, diabetes, bloat,
  157.           allergies and skin problems, etc. Hereditary and acquired
  158.           diseases may be discussed, as well as traumatic disorders.
  159.           Questions about nutrition and feeding are also appropriate
  160.           here. This newsgroup is not intended to replace veterinary care
  161.           in any way, but is to help inform the dog owner about canine
  162.           health.

  165.           This is a moderated group and only posts faqs and informational
  166.           files relevant to rec.pets.dogs.*. The moderator is Cindy
  167.           Tittle Moore (rpd-info@netcom.com, rpd-info-request@netcom.com)
  168.           Appropriate faqs that are already cleared for posting to
  169.           news.answers are automatically eligible to be posted here.
  170.           Others that are regularly posted (and listed in "Complete List
  171.           of RPD.* FAQ's") are also eligible for posting here. No
  172.           discussion is permitted on this group. This group is intended
  173.           to make the faqs and artictles with useful information for RPD
  174.           more visible and easier to find, especially for newcomers.

  177.           This group is for miscellaneous questions that are not more
  178.           appropriate for one of the other groups. This includes chat,
  179.           humor, anything pertaining to canines not explicitly covered
  180.           elsewhere. This group replaces the original rec.pets.dogs

  184.           This unmoderated newsgroup proposed as rec.pets.dogs.rescue
  185.           will be used for the discussion of all aspects of dog rescue.

  200. History of the FAQ's

  202.    Michael Mahler attempted a FAQ in 1991 that consisted of compiled but
  203.    unedited articles saved from the net. Due to time constraints, he gave
  204.    up the project, and I received copies of the articles that he had
  205.    saved and incorporated much of them in here from other readers. I have
  206.    heard of other attempts at FAQ's well, but no real details.
  207.    
  208.    The current suite of RPD FAQ's started out as eight articles,
  209.    patterned largely after the RPC FAQ's the author had just completed.
  210.    These were put out publicly in the summer of 1992, and have since
  211.    grown to over 20 FAQs and some 80 breed specific FAQ's. Many of the
  212.    breed FAQ's are written by volunteers familiar with or researching the
  213.    breed.

  218.    First and foremost, I would like to thank the posters of RPD.* over
  219.    the years. Many of them contributed substantial material for this FAQ.
  220.    A good number have pointed out errors and corrections, keeping the
  221.    FAQ's wonderfully up-to-date. Some contributed unknowingly, as I
  222.    lifted their posts directly from the newsgroup, obtained them from
  223.    summaries kept by other people, or lifted them out of mailing lists.
  224.    Without this body of knowledge and contribution, these FAQ's would not
  225.    exist. A complete list of the faqs may be found in the regularly
  226.    posted "Complete List of rec.pets.dogs.* FAQs" on rec.pets.dogs.info.

  229.    years as the numbers have swelled beyond counting or listing. But a
